A prominent advocate for the irreligious says there are at least 30 "closeted" members of Congress who don't believe in God, and that he hopes a California congressman's Thursday admission of disbelief will encourage others to come forward.
The advocate, an advisory board member of the Secular Coalition for America, has for more than a decade plied private admissions of atheism from members of Congress with the promise of confidentiality, and said Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., is in good company.
Huffman said in an interview published Thursday that I suppose you could say I dont believe in God, though he's uncomfortable with the certainty the word "atheist" implies.
People are not ashamed, it's a political issue soley," the Secular Coalition member told the Washington Examiner.

Who cares, seriously... I dont’ want to hear about anyone’s private life anymore. I don’t want to know if they’re straight, gay, religious, non-religious... just do your job.
All we need is more atheists, like the deranged wacko who killed all those Christians in the Texas church last week.
Oh, they have a moral compass. It's just that the needle always points to them.
Probably close to 535 closeted COMMUNISTS as well.
Just 30? That’s all?
Yup.
What I dont understand is how Christians come to the view that we can somehow defeat evil using the same tools that evil uses.
But I agree that tapping into the Lord through prayer is far more destructive to them.
It never hurts top use as many weapons as possible against them though.
Amen, brother.
By tools, I mean more generally politics. Remember who owns all the Kingdoms of the world. It isnt God.
I believe it is mankind's duty to defeat evil wherever it exists. Schools deserve are utmost attention, for they are creating Godless souls that infect all institutions on earth.
It is a fight that has no end to it, as it will continue for as long as man inhabits the earth.
I agree that schools should be a focus, but more broadly children in general.
Just imagine if we had spent the effort and resources we squandered on politics over the last 40 years on religious schools or home schooling or evangelization of kids. Makes you sick to your stomach.
Politics is a scam and were suckers for playing.
The handful identified in the article leave out Bernie. Come on boys and girls, come out of the closet! I know the idea of being honest with
Your constituents is tough, but....
We have no choice but to play, however, we were indeed suckered to believe that the Republican Party was on our side, and the side of good against evil. That has fortunately been exposed. It is now our responsibility to eliminate them from the party and remove them from government. Remember that only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
We have to play, but we have a choice as to what. Weve been playing in the realm of secular politics for over 40 years, and what do we have to show for it?
Politics is a scam. Its a suckers game. Get rid of this gang of jamokes, we get a new gang.
