Well the report does say that Willeford briefed Johnnie on what had just happened, before they began the pursuit. I suppose it all clicked for Johnnie, and he got right on it.

I was thinking the same thing. In places like LA, a gunman running out towards an occupied vehicle, most would run him over...lol.

Then again the hero was bare foot, and I'm assuming right near the church. In fact one story has them exchanging fire out front while the suspect was in his vehicle and fleeing. No doubt everyone in the area could hear the gun fire and the wheelman possibly saw or maybe heard what was going on and joined in when asked. I dunno, just guessing.
