VBS usually lasts a week and typically consists of kids singing songs, doing skits, and having Bible stories read to them from picture books. The curriculum such as it is is set in advance.
As a VBS teacher’s aide he probably kept the kids in line and helped sing songs or read the picture books aloud. No real expertise is required.
Did he volunteer to be a VBS helper, a Bible study leader, or both? I’ve heard different reports, and it makes a difference.
If to be a VBS helper it could have been to scout out the church.
