It's not complicated, except for our overpaid intellectual news media betters and the punditocracy.
For example, Huffington Post contributor Carol Kuruvilla informs us that the phrase is used in Muslim prayers and affirms the supremacy of God. She even points out that American Christians use it, though in English. Her main point: It's harmless.
All this is true, except the misleading statement about Christians. The problem with her analysis is that it overlooks an additional reason for its use: warfare.
It's in the hadith. In this one, Khaibar (or Khaybar) was a Jewish settlement.
Narrated 'Abdul 'Aziz: Anas said, 'When Allah's Apostle invaded Khaibar, we offered the Fajr prayer there yearly in the morning) when it was still dark. The Prophet rode and Abu Talha rode too and I was riding behind Abu Talha. The Prophet passed through the lane of Khaibar quickly and my knee was touching the thigh of the Prophet . He uncovered his thigh and I saw the whiteness of the thigh of the Prophet. When he entered the town, he said, 'Allahu Akbar! Khaibar is ruined. Whenever we approach near a (hostile) nation (to fight) then evil will be the morning of those who have been warned.' He repeated this thrice. The people came out for their jobs and some of them said, 'Muhammad (has come).' (Some of our companions added, "With his army.") We conquered Khaibar, took the captives, and the booty was collected. (Bukhari 1, no. 367)
It's difficult to be clearer than that. Muhammad used the expression to instill terror in the Jews of Khaibar and to announce his arrival. As the hadith says, he conquered the town (or it surrendered).

The NYT says it’s a kind, benevolent shout of joy that should not bring fear into the hearts of those whose neck some subhuman savage is sawing.
The vermin yell it when they kill a human. They yell it just before they press the button that blows their guts all over the place. They yell it as they bow down in submission during their indoctrination service.
The NYT would have us think that it’s like “have a good day!”. The NYT has subjugated itself into the service of sharia, and is bowing down to those who would kill us.
They are screaming Islamic supremacy.

In related news, the mayor of Venice, Italy has given his police these orders: If anyone yells “Allahu akbar” in the city square, shoot them.
Nope, this is not satire.
You misunderstand, they’re saying “All in for the snackbar!”
Jihad is thirsty work.
It means “Allah is GREATER (than your god)”
That has been their war-cry for hundreds of years and I wish people would simply read some histories that were written over those hundreds of years rather than think this is just some pop culture discussion.
They want to make sure that they are heard.

We do not acknowledge “Allah” as God at all—none of the Hebrew or Greek words translated “God” are cognate with Arabic Allah; and the phrase “God is great” from Job 36:26 is not the same phrase as in Arabic whatsoever (“great” being translated from Hebrew saggi, an utterly different word from Arabic akbar).
That’s why we should drop hydrogen bombs on these sadistic countries to protect our own.
They are proclaiming their _god_ is greater than YHVH.
Its a sign of their total faith in Allah, and as well, a sign of their utter lack of rationality and complete fatalism.
I’ve seen them shout it from everything from shooting off fireworks, to the birth of a child, to randomly spraying AK-47 fire at an unseen enemy. It seems anything that works on their emotions in a big way gets an “Allah Akbar.”
WRONG! It is MINDLESS.

You are right. It is mindless. Like the blacks mumbling “muthafukka” at any stimulus. Some of my favorite You Tube videos were shot by moslems being bombed by the Russians in Syria. First, the bombs go off in the hills a klick or two away from the raghead with the video recorder and the “alluhu akar” is uttered in a calm tone. As the bombs explode closer, the chant is more urgent. Finally when parts of the building next door go flying, the “allahu akbar” is a strident as a two year old’s wail at the pitch of a seven year old girl. Then the screen goes all gray and dead. Allahu akbar, muthafukka.
