95,385,000: Record Number Not in Labor Force; Participation Rate Falls to 62.7%
CNSNews ^ | November 3, 2017 | Susan Jones

The economy added 261,000 jobs in October – the most since President Trump took office -- and the nation’s unemployment rate dropped another tenth of a point to 4.1 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday.

But a record number of Americans – 95,385,000 – were not in the labor force in October, and the critical labor force participation rate dropped four-tenths of a point to 62.7 percent, a disappointing show, as 76,500 Americans left the civilian labor force.

This is an interesting counterbalance to the low unemployment rate news that came out the other day.

This sort of thing didn’t matter at all when Obama was in office. And his economy obviously was bad. Trump’s economy is obviously better. But the media is now “concerned”.

Propaganda wing of the DNC.

The big carmakers noticed a drop in car sales as well.

Why do you need a car if you sit at home watching TV all day???

What do you expect when many (if not most) companies have a “No one over 40 need apply” policy?

Means we have more work to do.

Because of the aging of America that stat is probably going up anyway. It needs to be the ratio of working age men and women in the workforce.

The free market works to lower unemployment by reducing wages until labor supply meets labor demand. We need to restore the import tariffs, so that we don’t just get low unemployment, we actually get good paying jobs.

Good paying jobs will entice people back into the workforce.
It will reduce government safety net payments. And it will add more tax revenue.

The upcoming tax reform should help some too.

Might this be due to the strengthening US economy and people in the work force finally deciding to retire after being forced to continue working later than they had hoped? Just trying to make some kind of sense of this drop in participation.

Actually, it’s 95,385,000 + 1 = 95,385,001. They forgot to add me.

My wife is one of these "non-participants" in the labor force. A stay-at-home mom, pregnant with baby #4, she works her tail off! In addition, she provides child care for other moms here at home from time to time, bringing in enough cash to make both car payments and a couple grocery trips to Walmart each month.

Keeps wear and tear off one of our two cars, we don't have to pay day care, and we keep our income taxes down. It's a pretty good arrangement.

I'll never say she doesn't work though!

This story came from CNS News. They are very conservative. Their motto: “The Right News. Right now”.

This appears to be a matter of “inertia”. The millenials have just turned their back on work.

I was hoping for the reverse. I thought that as people had hopes for a job that they would come off the sidelines and start to enter the job market. This could have driven the classical “unemployment” numbers upward.

So, oddly enough, the low unemployment figures are a bad sign. They indicate that the poeple who left the game do not feel impelled to get back in while others leave.

If we have so many not working why do we keep letting more and more in from other countries?

Great question. I suppose these sort of statistics can be interpreted many different ways. It probably takes a PhD economist to figure it all out.

But remember this saying: Ask three economists the same question, and you’ll get five different answers.

I maintain that the REAL unemployment numbers should have been released during the campaign and that the true figures been used going forward. It was up around 15% during the worst of Obama and is likely down to maybe 12% (or even 10) now, a great improvement in less than a year. When it truly hits 5% in a couple of more years, a lot of eyes will be opened. But using today’s figuring they’ll have to be saying 1 or 1.5%, which will sound like BS, the way 5% did under the Obammunists.

That is a very important question. But shhh...you’re not supposed to bring that up.

Consider the great wave of migration to the U.S., from roughly 1880 to 1920. That wave had two important characteristics, ones that liberals conveniently ignore.

1. Most immigrants came in legally, and were vetted in places like Ellis Island.
2. There were many jobs available for those immigrants. Jobs in the factories, in the mills, on the railroad, etc.

Neither of these two characteristics is true today.
