It takes more than a map and a compass to navigate in the ocean. But a hand held GPS would probably have gotten the job done.

The Pacific Ocean is really big.

It sure is, I was taken aback when I read an article that said the US had a dumping ground for satellites 1,600 miles from the nearest land mass.............

The earth is comprised of 70% oceans and of the remaining 30%, one third of that is deserts of all types..........Then there is mountainous regions where no one lives.......

Bottom line to my post is that mankind and collective cities are a mere fraction of the planet's surface and there is no way we can have an influence on this planet's climate........

Should I post stories of those saved by a simple compass while they were lost at sea?

And from the link YOU provided:

"Charts can be considered as a type of map."

Imagine that?☺

I have no wisecracks for this, I am in tears.

It is a true miracle that these women and their dogs survived. Kudos to the women for planning for the worst and for their sheer will to survive. I’m very glad there is a happy ending to this story.

Without instruments / tables or a GPS, might have a problem finding an island by dead reckoning; but, definitely should have been able to find some landfall in four months by holding a course somewhat north of due west.

Solar still made from plastic sheet? It does rain at sea also. Catch condensation on surfaces overnight?
