It takes more than a map and a compass to navigate in the ocean. But a hand held GPS would probably have gotten the job done.
Yes. Its called an epirb. Our boat, and every boater I know has one.
It sure is, I was taken aback when I read an article that said the US had a dumping ground for satellites 1,600 miles from the nearest land mass.............
The earth is comprised of 70% oceans and of the remaining 30%, one third of that is deserts of all types..........Then there is mountainous regions where no one lives.......
Bottom line to my post is that mankind and collective cities are a mere fraction of the planet's surface and there is no way we can have an influence on this planet's climate........
Should I post stories of those saved by a simple compass while they were lost at sea?
Just based on my experience when mr. mm navigating when we travel.
I usually drive cause I like to and he doesn’t. And I’m the better driver anyways.
Nope fully trained on using Charts and other types of nav gear.
Any dummy can read a map
There is a dif so maybe do yourself a favor and learn something new:
You’re still butt hurt over the use of the term map over chart? Get a life Fred.
Most people that sail carry fishing gear and amazingly, there are fishes in the sea!
"Charts can be considered as a type of map."
Imagine that?☺
I have no wisecracks for this, I am in tears.
It is a true miracle that these women and their dogs survived. Kudos to the women for planning for the worst and for their sheer will to survive. I’m very glad there is a happy ending to this story.
No butt hurt just some really lame comments from many that have obviously never spent more than an afternoon on the water.
Without instruments / tables or a GPS, might have a problem finding an island by dead reckoning; but, definitely should have been able to find some landfall in four months by holding a course somewhat north of due west.
And you consider this, "Lame comments" right slick?
Solar still made from plastic sheet? It does rain at sea also. Catch condensation on surfaces overnight?
The Pacific Ocean is really big.

And NEVER forget...what you are looking at is
Just the top!!!
I did swim call over the deepest part. Over 22,500’ or some such astronomical number.
It could have ended with just the finding of 2 well fed dogs.....
I got a waiver for my 4th weekend. The CO really liked me and gave me my permanent Cutterman’s pin anyway.
Chart = water map
