There is something that confuses me about this. Why would the FBI hire this guy to work undercover if they were part of this whole sordid affair? The FBI seems to be involved in this - I don’t understand why they’d want someone working undercover to discover what they knew full well they were doing.

I was wondering the same thing. It seems that there are people inside the FBI that are working against each other and there are a lot of loose canons mingling around. I don’t think I put that very well but I’m confused, too.

I believe the story is that the informant was an exec of one of the uranium companies involved, became aware of activity that he didn’t at all like, and informed the FBI or a federal prosecutor.
Probably the investigation was launched and found results before higher ups realized what was going on.
