64 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana, 51 percent of Republicans
The Hill and Gallup ^

A new Gallup poll shows growing support for marijuana legalization, with 64 percent of Americans now in favor of the measure.

The number is the highest level of support in nearly half a century of surveying adults on the issue, according to Gallup. Support has steadily increased in recent years, with the latest figure up 4 percentage points over last year and up 14 points from 2011.

The poll also showed a majority of Republicans favoring legalization for the first time, with 51 percent expressing support. That number is up 9 percentage points from last year, according to Gallup.

“Why you so uptight, man? I could pluck you and you’d sound like a guitar string.”

Laz, you are always a card. But I thought on FR we can disagree without flaming our fellow FReepers. Strong arguments and beliefs exist on both sides of this topic. Libertarian vs conservative, got it.

But isn’t there now nearly six decades of evidence of the effects of illegal drug use? Those dopers who made themselves noncompetitors in the job world (allowing me to work into my sixties) will in their old age become wards of the state on your dime as well as mine.

There is a strong push to get the youth to vote so pot is shoved onto the ballot to get their vote but most conservatives have seen enough of the scourge drugs have done to communities to want no part of hooking another generation in getting “high!”

We’ve watched businesses slide dealing with stoned employees and accident rates soar, not to mention auto accidents increase!

The costs of drugs destroys not only business but communities and families as well.

If you think the health costs of tobacco, smoking was and continues to be bad, what about the lung, mouth and throat cancers of pot smokers.

More stoned citizens, I don’t think so.

Laz is not a buffoon. He’s a very intelligent patriot who also has a sense of humour. I’m glad that he’s here and I’m far from the only one.

Nope, keep it illegal and role back state laws legalizing it. Look at the damage it causes. What a waste.

We should all take a sober look at the terrible damage that was caused by the repeal of the 18th amendment as an example.

Everyone was drunk and on the dole. It got so bad that it caused the stock market to crash just 4 years earlier.

And I’m sure not as dangerous as a lot of the narcotics, sleeping pills, and other pharmaceutical drugs that have long-term consequences. I can’t tell you how many vets, retired PD and sheriffs, and other normal people I run into who have cards here in AZ. They say it’s better than being on 17 PTSD pills, or similar. They’re not trying to get buzzed that I know of, and feel better and calmer on the medical mj than on the pills. And they say less lethargic too than the pills, amazingly enough.

Well said, sargon.

I never could understand how so-called small government conservatives think it’s fine for the government to send you to prison for possessing a plant.

Thanks for the ping.

IMO, cannabis should be legal to have, to use & to grow (for personal use), period.

Glad to see more Americans feel similarly.

If a state could effectively regulate the content of pot to eliminate fetanyl, and tax it to make money from potheads, I’d buy Funions stock and favor it. But they can’t. Too many farmers, and the problems remain.
