POUND, Va. (AP) People in Virginias coal country still love President Donald Trump, but not his pick to be their next governor.
Ed Gillespie is a Washington insider and Trumps choice as Virginians prepare to go to the polls. The president promised southwest Virginia voters in a tweet, Ed Gillespie will never let you down!
Trump, who promised to revive the coal industry, had some of his biggest victory margins in Appalachias coal region last year. But those same voters said they know little about Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, corporate lobbyist and multimillionaire who was raised in New Jersey and now lives in Northern Virginia.
The town of Pound, nestled near the Kentucky line, was once a booming coal center where the main drag got so busy with shoppers that people couldnt find a parking spot. Now, many shops are boarded up with dusty For Sale signs. Some buildings are collapsing, overgrown with weeds. Jobs are scarce. Prescription pain pills are a major problem. The high school closed in 2011.
Eight out of 10 voters in Pound backed Trump, and some of the towns remaining business owners and patrons say their faith has already been rewarded.
Ive seen more coal trucks in the last six months than I have in the past eight years, said David Williams, who owns a TV repair and fishing gear store.
But Gillespie is about as un-Trumplike as a candidate can be, and generates much less interest.

And how are we doing in the Senate, ifinnegan?
He had to endorse him, but he didn’t pick him.
Oh, but ifinnegan thinks that things in the Senate are just Jim dandy! Voting for candidates as long as they have an "R" after their name is all that's needed!
Better than if the Democrats had a majority.
McCain will be dead soon and others will be replaced by more conservative Republicans.
Most of the Senate needs to be repealed and replaced.
The ones we have are more concerned about citizens of other countries who broke into our country and are robbing us blind.
Alexander, Corker, Flake, Graham, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Murkowsky, McCain, Rubio, Gardner, Burr, Tillis, Portman, McConnell, Thune, Cornyn, Cochran, Isackson, Blunt, Johnson, Toomey, Capito, Rounds, Fischer, Collins, Wicker, Sasse, Ernst, Young, Boozman and Shelby are all undocumented Democrats in R jerseys.
Lovely, just lovely. Keep up that sentiment, and we'll never get rid of the RINOs.
So when you have a cancer, don't cut it out even though going under the knife and the recovery will be painful, just take pain pills and hope for the best. That's what we've been doing for the last 30 years. That's how we got Mitch and Paul.
Thanks a lot!
Yeah... lets let the RAT win...THAT will show em. Bright!
VA is now a blue state when it comes to statewide elections. The Dems have won the last 10 elections. Demography is destiny.
Always voting for the "R" because he's "better than voting for a Democrat" is the STUPIDEST tactic ever - it's what's gotten us into this mess. RINO politician has no respect for you, Mr. "vote the 'R' always" voter!
Corey Stewart, a real conservative, lost to Gillespie by less than a percentage point in the primary. Regardless, VA is a blue state thanks to NoVA.
Bill Bolling refused to endorse Ken.
Well they better “love him” or at least vote for him.....the Democrat challenger in NOT an option!
Tell me: what respect does a Republican pol have for constituents who will always, always vote for him only because he has an "R" after his name? You really think it's because of the kindness in his heart - that pols are deep down inside really nice people?
Great - another "Gotta vote for the 'R'!" voter - because he's...well...because he's...because he's...well..."
So, what are his qualifications?
"Well...he's not a Democrat!"

Like him or not, Bannon is the one person who really is working on the only solution to this horrible problem.
The ones we have are more concerned about citizens of other countries who broke into our country and are robbing us blind.

I don’t even believe we can get the RINOs straightened out.
They just need to be Cantorized.
Voting for the R jersey gets you Senators like Flimsey Grahamnesty saying they will keep voting for amnesty until removed from office, daring voters to kick him out.
It was the establishment that sabotaged Cucinelli and in some ways I might like to return the favor.
I already did with Amnesty Ed once with the Senate race, but they didn’t get the message.
Is Gillespie’s running mate of any use? GOPe ain’t takin’ no chances after their Cantor catastrophe.
Voting for the R jersey gets you Senators like Graham and Rubio telling you they are going to always side with illegal aliens and their employers against the rule of law and the citizens.
