Senator John McCain delivered a thinly veiled attack of President Trump's lack of military service on Sunday evening.
McCain, who has been criticized about his war hero status by Trump, seemed to retaliate while speaking about the Vietnam War in an interview aired on C-Span Sunday night.
The 81-year-old from Arizona spoke about how wealthy Americans were able to avoid being drafted into service during the battle - in which he spent five years as a prisoner of war - by having a doctor say they had a bone spur.
If that sounds familiar to anyone, that's because it is the excuse that President Trump used in one of his five deferments during Vietnam. The other four were because he was still a college student.
'One aspect of the conflict, by the way, that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest-income level of America, and the highest-income level found a doctor that would say they had a bone spur,' McCain said in the interview.
'That is wrong. That is wrong. If we are going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.'

Guess he forgot “Fortunate Son” was written about Al Gore, Jr., fortunate son of Senator Al Gore, Sr.
“I was drafted into the Vietnam fiasco and I feel like anyone who could have avoided that political war is OK in my book . Were the lives of 58,900 service members worth the 10 years we spent there only to surrender . When it was over I worried so much for the good folks in the South and the Cambodians who suffered immensely for supporting the USA .”
An utter waste of good men and treasure. Started and escalated by the Democrat Machine.
I enlisted at the beginning of the end (1972) and made a career of the service. The All Volunteer Army (and all services) was a good start.
Even mow, the Draft both as law and as a administration, an abomination left over from W.Wilson (A racist Dem of the first stripe) still exists. END the draft. NOW.
After all, slavery was abolished, was it not?
And to Lionheartusa1
I’m completely with you on the OK part.
Yet he’s copacetic with Bill Clinton lying to his ROTC advisor to achieve the same end.
According to his 2015 memoir, John Fogerty said
he was thinking about David Eisenhower,
the grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower,
who married Julie Nixon,
the daughter of President Richard Nixon in 1968,
when he wrote “Fortunate Son”.
Daddy and Gramps got a ship named for them but John McCain III knows he's not leaving behind a very honorable legacy. Songbird and Obama pimp won't look good in the history books.
Back then deferments were a dime a dozen. Trump didn’t do anything thousands of others didnt do. I wish every guy who got drafted had refused go. The US govt killed 58,000 beautiful boys my age for nothing.
Im not too enthusiastic about draft dodgers of my approximate age.
Little Johnny went into the family business and wore an ice cream suit, became a `reverse ace’ and questions why the average guy hesitated to jump on LBJ’s war bandwagon as a ground-pounder.
Juan never met an illegal or war he didn’t like.
I was in the Milwaukee airport a couple years back dozing off in a seat from jet lag when I awoke to the sound of clapping as US soldiers were entering the waiting area as their plane unloaded . Tears began flowing uncontrollably from my eyes as I witnessed the difference in the way Nam vets were treated on their return home .
Thx - I was aware of that.
One thing ,,,, The service to my country made me aware of how lucky I really was to be born here ,, the greatest place in the world . At 19 I was truly in culture shock when I landed in Nam . We are so fortunate .
Doesn’t seem like it’s anytime in the near future.....he’s like a “Lazarus from hell”
I’d never read a memoir, but had heard the Al Gore angle years before 2015.
This crap was known before the election. Why bring it up now? McNasty shouldn’t throw stones, his Hanoi John days might just resurface!!!
Doesn’t sound like a fake to me. I doubt there were any voice actors in North Vietnam at the time who could fake such a distinctive voice.
