Also, Ataturk's vision was a secular, democratic Turkey, fully integrated with the West. As part of that he completelye disbanded the Caliphate.
That only changed when Erdogan and his Islamists started embedding their tentacles into the country.

If your want to know why Turkey was included in NATO, just take a look at the map as it was during the Cold War. Geopolitics is not that hard if you know your geography.
And Islamism was held in check by Kemalism during most of the postwar era.
