Japan says lunar chasm measuring 50km long and 100 metres wide could be used as a base for astronauts and their equipment.
Scientists have fantasised for centuries about humans colonising the moon. That day may have drawn a little closer after Japans space agency said it had discovered an enormous cave beneath the lunar surface that could be turned into an exploration base for astronauts.
The discovery, by Japans Selenological and Engineering Explorer (Selene) probe, comes as several countries vie to follow the US in sending manned missions to the moon.
Using a radar sounder system that can examine underground structures, the orbiter initially found an opening 50 metres wide and 50 metres deep, prompting speculation that there could be a larger hollow.

It's an abandoned mine shaft created by the aliens who are doing extensive mining...mostly on the dark side. Everyone knows that. Sheesh.
He smells cheese.
So H G Wells’ Selenites really did live underground....
Let me explaine the mission.... no there is to much let me sum up.
We are going to spend billions of dollars to establish a lunar base on a dead moon and live in a cave.
Everyone will want to come and visit Lunar Base One just to experience cave dwelling.
I know that it is easier to find a cave, but surely if we can get to the Moon, we can make our own caves (and engineer them to be more spacious and efficient in their layout).
One of my favorite one-pane cartoons EVER.
#19 who was found buried there?..... : )
How many holes does it take to fill the Albert Hall?
Air? Is there air?
Gary Larson probably saw that and thought, "Why didn't I think of that?"
I really liked that show as a kid, have all episodes downloaded on my PC.
Used to have a 3 foot model/toy of Eagle One and two communicators when i was young.
LOL
