I’ve been to Napa Valley a couple of times, mostly up and down that road where many well known wineries are located. I saw an interview with a lady from a winery family who said the vineyards themselves had not been damaged much, and had actually served as firebreaks and saved many areas from the fires
And this time of year lawns should still be green and mowed, and landscaping done around homes. What is there about the setting of so many homes that allowed the fires to just sweep right in and set the homes afire? Are many surrounded by dry woods?

Puzzeling to me is how no one even bothersed to pick up the phone and let these guys know what they were heading towards.

You usually think of burned homes on he edge of the forest, but this was a whole extended neighborhood burned down. It looked like 100s of homes gone.

Horrifying. These men are heroes. And remember it was the Berkeley FD that were ordered to remove the American flags from the backs of their trucks a few years after 9/11, told it might “offend” someone. The only thing offensive is that California’s government is more concerned about illegals than infrastructure.
I was once, at 18 years old, a rookie California forestry department employee, assigned to a forestry department fire house, north of Santa Rosa, in Cloverdale.
Went on all kinds of fires - forests, grass land, structures and even a whole lumber yard. None were as large as some of the recent fires in the region, though, as a fire fighter, each and every one is not taken lightly nor assumed to be “controllable” until control is actually achieved.
I have great respect for every fire fighter. Thank G-d we have some who will do the job.

As you know sadly, there were a few bitter nasties who tried to inject politics into this unprecedented natural disaster...on the Breaking Raging Fires Update Thread...Lots of Freepers on that thread posted last Monday have property family, and friends affected by the fires! In a situation like this, we are all Americans regardless of our politics.

I will post a link to a video which asserts, and appears to show, that the fire burned almost twice as hot as a regular structure fire (enough to melt metal, glass etc.) I didn’t follow the discussion of the color of the smoke and I don’t agree that there’s some kind of “wave” involved, but they do make the point that it’s odd in that it’s hotter, faster and more destructive. I would agree with that assertion because there’s often just a concrete slab left instead of a collapsed pile etc. as shown in the video you linked. The video below was apparently posted by a Christian and mentions God in the title but the content focused on the unusual nature of the Nappa fire.
