401k’s are better. Kick them out at anytime. At least they earned something. A 50% base pay after 20 years is nothing but an annuity. What do financial planners think of annuities?

It’s not the downgrade. It’’s the message it sends to others.

. They get paid less, don't have as nice quarters, have to salute you...and you repay that loyalty by screwing with one of their wives.

How is that different than an officer's wife? They get paid less don't have a nice quarters, have to salute you. You repay that loyalty by screwing one of their wives.

I love it. They are putting together a course about how bad it is for a general to sleep with an enlisted mans wife.

Everything in that sentence is what is wrong with our military today.

What part of this is so difficult to understand.

They should treat cops the same when they abuse their authority.

Would it have been deemed inappropriate if the relationship had been with an officer's wife?

Or with a man of any rank?

Let the punishment fit the crime, for all cases of an officer who screws the wife of an enlisted man under his command.

A) Both men retire involuntarily.

B) For purposes of retirement, pension, etc, as of the day of retirement, they switch ranks, so (in this case) the 2-star retires as the rank of the man whose wife he was sleeping with, and the enlisted soldier retires as an O-8.

Yes.

A relationship with anyone but his lawful spouse is inappropriate.

If he is unmarried then it is fine unless the person is, A. married or B. in his chain of command.

In this case she was married to someone who was under his authority. Since it was the spouse of an enlisted they will throw the book at him because it is considered more abusive.

Droit du seigneur is not allowed in the US military.

Yet communist Lt Rappone continues to serve. The Army can move fast when it wants to. It can move very, very slow when it wants to (Bergdahl, Rappone, more).

The retire at 20 years with 50% of base pay comes with a condition: You are subject to recall to active duty at any time until you reach a total of 30 years active and retired time. I know of 3 friends who were recalled to active duty in 2001 because of their skills, they were Arabic and Farsi linguists.

I wish they had recalled me to active duty (I retired in 1994). My understanding is that, if they recall you to active duty after retirement, when you "re-retire", your retirement pay is now based upon the current pay scale, not the one that you initially retired on.

That would have given me another $1000 or so per month ... nice ...

Blue Lancer, that is correct on the adjusted retired pay to 50% of base pay to your ‘re-retirement’ pay.

I retired in 88, with 20 years. I was sweating getting recalled in 90-91, for the Gulf war, but the call never came, and I wasn’t volunteering.

They're both bad.

At least officers are within the same broad peer group. But as officers, we are given a host of privileges, and great authority over enlisted. It's why the most junior troops eat first, most senior officers eat last. Our greater privilege come with a greater responsibility for their welfare. We owe them that.

Adulterous relationships on the military are always bad, for many reasons. But when it is the most powerful taking advantage of the most junior, it is particularly heinous.

In World War II, Vice Admiral Bill Halsey for reprimanded, not court marshaled, for poor performance in a Hurricane

Hurricanes are an act of God.

And since it was a Pacific Ocean storm, it was a cyclone.

There was considerable loss of life (at least one can sunk).

Admiral Nimitz stated that since he had so many weathermen aboard ships, they should have been consulted.

One of the task force commanders (Rear Admiral rank) was able to steer clear of the storm. He had the good since to do that.

So if the war hero Bill Halsey is to get a letter reprimand by an act of God, then a two star General doing something that is CONDUCT UNBECOMING AN OFFICER -- that officer should be COURT MARSHALED.

Also in World War II, a deserter was shot when there were too many problems with desertion. HOLLYWOOD made a movie about this: The Execution of Private Slovik.

And justice for all.
