A story that should be getting more attention is one out of the Black Hills of South Dakota. It doesn't get much more interesting than a depredating lion, a 14 year old hunter protecting the family livelihood, and a rifle won at an NRA raffle.
The story has already been written by Tom Griffith. The article is well done. I do not want to steal the author's thunder.
Here is an excerpt to the rapidcityjournal.com:
After a long, sad day, Streffs youngest child, 14-year-old Dalton, who fancies himself a hunter, told his mother he was going to go sit in the backyard and await the return of the beast that had killed their young goat. The 5-foot-10, 130-pound, brown-haired teenager, who had previously completed a hunters safety course, brought with him his 30.06-caliber Remington rifle he won last year in an NRA raffle.
Lacking a proper blind in which to shelter himself from approaching critters, Dalton opted instead for a Little Tikes playhouse conveniently located in the backyard. There on a chair he sat, scanning the surrounding woodlands for the killer cat.
I grew up reading the Jim Corbett stories of man eating cats. The famous hunter had those adventures in the India of the British Raj. This young man's adventure has much in common with those stories. A big cat that is a danger to the community. A goat is taken, and the drama begins.
A major difference is the American farmers and villagers have guns and know how to use them. Big cats that become a danger to livestock and humans do not last very long. Young Dalton is to be congratulated for showing grace under pressure, as did 12 year old Alyssa Caldwell

Congratulations, Dalton.
A 70 lb. cat!
I think you need a license to hunt mountain lions in SD, but do you have to get one for varmint control on your own property?
Since I won a COLT AR-15 from a local Chamber of Commerce raffle, I guess anytime I shoot something with it I could have a headline like “Oldster with Chamber of Commerce rifle stops herd of feral hogs.”
Excellent post DEan.
“...for a Little Tikes playhouse conveniently “
I about spit out my coffee. I used to use my kids playhouse as a blind for taking out gophers with a high powered pellet gun.
High heelin it across the square
Love Dire Straits
"If the Mountain Lion is between 50 and 100 yards away, has ears up, and is following your movement, keep your eye on the animal and again, stay in groups. Stand on high ground and begin looking for rocks, sticks, or other weapons. "
Where's this person's gun??
Oldster with Chamber of Commerce rifle stops herd of feral hogs
Sounds like a good headline to me.
Great shot placement
At least he spared Rocky Raccoon
Thank God
That’s a tall fence behind him like a game farm fence
Anyone know the context
If you have a weapon (pepper spray, knife, hiking pole),
Yeah ... that individual has a rather stunted idea of 'weapons'.
Yes, shades of Jim Corbett. I have read all of his books.
Keeps the goats from getting loose ...
They have a goat dairy in the wild Black Hills of South Dakota.
“nice kitty” ;-)
Tks
I broke my rule
Didn’t read the article
It is a good picture.
Nice work Dalton.
