Hardball: McConnell Changes Rule to Overcome Obstruction of Trump's Judicial Picks, Dems Fume

This may seem like an abstruse parliamentary maneuver -- and it is -- but Mitch McConnell just escalated the judicial wars in a minor but meaningful way. If frustrated conservatives want the GOP Senate majority to " start acting like one ," McConnell's decision eliminates a lever Democrats have been using to stymie some of President Trump's judicial picks. In that sense, he's very much acting like a majority leader; a Democratic one. Try not to let your eyes glaze over as you read the details of this move, which involves dramatically reducing the power of so-called "blue slips" on judges, with which Senators from the home state of a presidential selection have been able to withhold their consent in order to prevent that nomination from moving forward. Not anymore. McConnell warned Democrats that he was leaning this direction last month, hoping they'd abandon this form of partisan blockade. They didn't. So he's followed through on his threat -- via the Weekly Standard:

Yeah, that makes no sense whatsoever.

Take a look at the House. They’ve passed a ton of legislation with a majority. If they were required to come up with 60% that number would be zero.

So now blue slips can be shipped to Venezuela to cover shortages of another kind of paper...

I think McTurtle may be feeling some heat

I bet his internals in KY are horrid and nationwide. It is about time. The Senate needs to be run like a finely tuned corporation, it needs Demming, and all sorts of quality / culture changing tools to get the product out the door faster and quicker like we demand when we buy a car, toaster, etc.

Conservative groups do not band together to vote him out...yet. Or maybe Trump just doesn’t add his clout to the effort...yet.

Not yet...wish we were. First, Blue Slips are still part of the Senate, they’re just talking about getting rid of them. Second, who knows if the Pubbies can get 51 votes for saying that the sky is blue, let alone any actual decisions?

‘Blue slips’ aren’t in the Senate rules, so there’s nothing to vote on. Blue slips are a custom, relatively recent in current form, in the Senate Judiciary Committee. (Wikipedia actually has an OK entry on ‘Blue slip’.)

In practice, the Senate Judiciary Chairman chooses how blue slips are dealt with, keeping in mind that Senate majorities can become minorities at any election. A weapon for one side will be used as a weapon for the other.

Of course.... ALL of the Uniparty gets that they cannot rule by fiat (that is without laws being decided by We the People) without having the judges in place within the federal system to ensure the oligarchs (including those of the so-called “right wing” corporatists/globalists) get the laws they want and need expediently ruled on favorably. The dems and repubs of the elite uniparty BOTH want us ruled by Judicial Fiat— judges creating law, so they won’t be at risk as “lawmakers” for anything important. It’s how they roll inside the Beltway food trough. Trump even trying to cut this off— is a huge danger to their machinery— which we the people are not part of.

So FReepers are correct in ID-ing that McConnell responds to his “donors”-— the same donors who would demand obamaumaocare remain in place as they wanted it in the first place, with the individual mandate and US Supreme Court decision which was clearly Un-constitutional to enforce it. All done in order to remove any costs to larger businesses of insuring employees as they had prior done, complete with the huge profit incentives buying off Big Pharma (prime vendor lure as suppliers to govt. care) and Big Insurance/Chamber of Commerce drones— with enforced individual premium mandates.

Classic cost-shifting, in much the same fashion the coal industry (operators and mineral rights owners) created a “mandate” for a taxpayer financed healthcare system for their employees (for black lung and generally full subsidized healthcare, cost shifting this away from the owners). Understand that im saying this not as some labor rabble rouser... but clear understanding of what our RINO/DINO globalists are being told to do— and being well compensated for it in donations/income/kickbacks/IPO offerings as bribes. This is how it is done.
