Curious if this was a safety glass that might hold together when broken - like a car window

The windshield does.

Maybe in the 1970s - pretty sure you’ll find safety glass on all windows these days. My 1994 Buick Wagon had it all around (broke a side window once) as did my old 80’s Dodge Colt (broke the hatch glass).
