Exactly two weeks before the opening of the polling stations, it seems that the hope of ANO ("Yes") is nothing less than a convincing first place.
(Excerpt) Read more at zpravy.idnes.cz ...
ANO is a populist and slightly center-right party formed by Andrej Babi, a leading Czech entrepreneur. It is currently the junior partner in a ruling coalition lead by the Social Democrats.
Opinion polls show that ANO has moved to a commanding lead, and should be able to form a government with one or more small parties such as the Christian Democrats, Civic Democrats, TOP 09 and the Freedom Party (each one of which is center to center-right).
The left has collapsed in the Czech Republic, with the Social Democrats, Communists and Pirate Party each running at about 10 percent in the polls.
The Pirate Party at only 7%. ARRRRGGG!
There’s something mighty fishy ‘bout that, matey.
the official name is Czechia isn’t?
thought I read something about that.
I still call it Czechoslovakia so what the heck to do I know.
:^)
Well, better ANO than the Socialists.
I’d vote for the Civic Democrats. I hadn’t heard that they’d been decimated by scandal.
Good article on it here
I have some Czech blood, to my annoyance pretty much the whole family still says “Czechoslovakian” even cousins that were born after the split. ;d
Czechia is just, I don’t know doesn’t sound right. I’ll keep thinking of it as the Czech Republic. Or hell, Bohemia, which would be similar to calling The Netherlands “Holland”.
You're just parroting what you heard about the situation elsewhere.
On the other hand, you do convey avast amount of wisdom in those few words!
Thanks for the link. FRiend!
/throwing out an anachronism just for old time's sake
This whole area has a fascinating history. Just spending time now reading up on it. A bit complex with unfamiliar terms, but I'm not letting that stop me.
Personally, I am unable to place ANO to the left or to the right of the political center. It really depends on what Andrej Babi thinks will be beneficial to him. His party has no ideology. It is his project, a one-man’s party. In the electoral campaign, Mr Babi sounds anti-illegal-immigrant, but some of the leading candidates of his party, such as Justice Minister Pelikán and Defense Minister Stropnický are pro-illegal-immigrant.
It is true that the left as a whole has collapsed (especially the Social Democrats, but not so much the Communists), but the right has collapsed too (the Civic Democrats, TOP 09). It would be more accurate to say that the traditional (meaning normal) political parties have collapsed and voters are looking for something new.
I will probably vote for the Civic Democrats. They are somewhat anti-immigrant, critical of the EU (but they are not proposing leaving the EU now), right of center on economics and not pushing political correctness.
TOP 09 are our RINOs (right in name only). They try to portrait themselves as a center-right party, but at the same time they are pushing political correctness and are very pro-EU. I would say that Angela Merkel is their role model.
The SPD (Mr Okamura’s party) is explicitly anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim, but it is rather left-wing on economy and very amateurish, so I can’t vote for them.
I, too, hope the Civic Democrats make a strong showing!
I doubt you would want to vote for the Pirate Party. They are a strange bunch of social justice warriors and libertarians. There are some pro-Putin elements in their party too.
Well, it is true that some people try to push the name Czechia even in some semi-official documents because they think it sounds cool, but I find this name horrible. Czechoslovakia divided into the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic (or Slovakia) nearly 25 years ago.
Andrej Babis must be the Czech Donald Trump...is he...?
No. Donald Trump is an American patriot who does what he thinks is best for the US. Andrej Babi is an opportunist who will say anything to make people vote for his party.
Sounds like your average politician scum.
The Czech Republic petitioned the UN to formally change its name to Czechia.
This action confused me, they can change the name of their own country any time they want to and don’t need UN approval.
Or maybe I missed something.
