It is better our media has avoided war reporting in Syria and Iraq.

Looking at the pictures, these look like locals. A lot of the Sunni tribesmen of North-West Iraq threw in with ISIS, many as mercenaries, and IIRC were being used to hold outlying areas while the hardcore was in the main show.

These would not have been as fanatical as the foreign imports.
