DALLAS -- Gunfire rang out on Sunday night, just two floors below Chris Bethel's hotel room in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
"I could just hear the gun shots, continuously. Just full automatic," Bethel told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. "There was explosions going off. It was like a bomb just went off man. And then there were more gun shots."
The Fort Worth resident was attending an IT conference in Las Vegas when the shooting unfolded. An Iraq War veteran, Bethel told the station he immediately recognized the sound as gunfire.
Now, police are crediting the Haltom High School graduate with helping lead them to the room where 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, of Mesquite, Nevada, was shooting into a crowd of more than 22,000 people.

"I feel like I didn't do enough."Read the bottom line.

That's not what he said.
He stated, "The hardest part for me was I couldn't get a hold of somebody fast enough".
He said this because the hotel desk and 911 did not respond when he called.

I tried to minimize my additions to the excerpt from the article. So I took that quote, out of context.
Hoped it would be enough to get someone to actually read the article.
It was a short article and I was trying to limit additions from the article in my comments. Was not trying to distort it.

Because 911 was calling the front desk to tell them to turn off the elevators. They didn’t want the shooter to easily move around the hotel or get out. The cops had to climb the 32 flights of stairs wearing armor.

It was probably because everyone in the lobby and front desk hauled azz.

That seems dumb doesn’t it. Why not ride up to the 30th or 31st floor, get off and walk one or two flights to get the killer.

No.
There could have been someone inside who was part of the conspiracy and they could stop the elevators, trapping the police inside.
I would never get on an elevator in an emergency of this type.

Or have a surprise waiting when the doors popped open - like some nasty IEDs, a sandbagged M60, et al. There are comparable risks using the stairs that's for sure, but at least the team could approach in-force, there would be room to maneuver or quickly withdraw if warranted. An elevator won't have those options.

Actually it’s what they needed to do. They had to keep the guy contained in the hotel on that level. The police were worried he could use the elevator to move around freely and possibly escape. Now they only needed to guard the stairs. The shooter had better firepower and most cops don’t wear rifle plates. The Kevlar vest won’t stop a 5.56mm or 7.62x51mm. This was similar to the Hollywood bank robbery in 90s.
It’s all in the 911 / police audio chatter files.

Naaaw - your post was good to go - I only expanded on it a bit. I bet the first
Die Hard movie was crossing more than one cop's mind that night - wondering just what the heck they were climbing into, what was it they were going to face. I can imagine it, I certainly can.

One theory is it was a Gun deal overtaken by rogue FBI agents that double crossed him Hotel staff in on it.
Just another theory floating around.

Aww, do I hafta? LoL. Haven't looked in there in years - it was just collecting stuff from trolls and whatnot, so I quit even looking. "Mail" has stayed red at the top of the screen and I just ignored it like it's not there.

Near as I can tell, the last message I had looked at was from March 2010. When I'm over something, that's it.

I read that he had blocked the stairs somehow and set up cameras in the hall. How could one man accomplish all these things without staff and other guests noticing?

The cameras were easy enough - not sure about the stair blockage info. To me that could mean anything from an "out of order" sign to furniture piled up against a door.
