A normal .308 at 3 feet is about 155 db.
“Silenced”, the .308 at 3 feet is about 125 db.
A loud rock concert anywhere in the venue is about 120 db.
A jet engine at 100 feet is about 140 db.
Even with a silencer, the shots are louder than the concert (minus losses due to distance). Even with the loss due to distance, the “silenced” shots are loud enough to be heard as distinct and rhythmic gunshots over the noise of a country music concert. Even if the muzzle blast were completely silenced with a magical perfect silencer, the supersonic rounds would make a distinct noise as they passed near the concert attendees, and that is probably the sound that got their attention in the actual shooting.
Other details:
- silencers often boost muzzle velocity slightly by increasing the effective barrel length.
- silencers often harm accuracy or produce an offset, but that can be corrected for by sighting in with the silencer in place, and that level of accuracy doesn’t matter when shooting into a packed crowd.
- Modern silencers work even with fully automatic fire, although the muzzle blast is still louder than a rock concert, and the sonic crack is undiminished.
Shooting back with a normal handgun would have been useless (and I fire 100+ handgun rounds per day). Shooting back with a sighted in .308 or 30-06 scoped rifle would have solved the problem almost immediately. But who carries a deer rifle for their concealed carry weapon?

Still, until I know better, in my mind I'm choosing to imagine some inbred retard who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 5-feet away, and shooting into a crowd was his way of compensating for lack of any real firearms skill. That said, I did briefly imagine someone like that using tracers every 5th round, but then realized that an inbred retard probably wouldn't even consider that either.
I mean, we're talking "Democrat-voter" level of stupidity involved here, I'm guessing. That's pretty low. Mind you, most liberals don't go on shooting sprees, I'm merely talking about IQ levels here, not capacity for violence.

Silencers are to keep you from going deaf. And they are only effective on relatively small caliber weapons.
