I bet it’s FATCA-related. Trump really ought to repeal FATCA. It’s probably way less controversial than any of the other big pieces of legislation being thrashed out and, so far, that have crashed and burned.

If I had to guess, Putin is doing this so he can skim most of the investment. But a real program to attract qualified immigrants would lower the threshold to $100K and keep the language and residency requirements for citizenship.

When Hong Kong empties Canada offered citizenship for each person who brought in 2 million in cash and investments.

This is a way to get high end people into your country.

EXACTLY correct but so seldom said.

There were maybe two countries on Earth with those requirements; the USA and LIBYA.

Great company, eh..? And now I’m not sure about Libya anymore.

It used to be Americans were highly sought customers for non-US banks —we were the Brahmin class.

But NOW..?

We are treated like AIDS-carrying Lepers armed with IRS letters. They want NOTHING to do with us, lest they run afoul of the long arm of the US Gummint.

Another way is to run a world-wide lottery with no house percentage and no taxes on the payout. A country could populate themselves with nothing but multi-millionaires in no time. It's surprising no country has tried that.
