Travel for Trump administration officials on government-owned, rented, leased, or chartered aircraft, will now require prior approval from White House chief of staff John Kelly, after it was revealed that multiple senior officials in the Trump Cabinet were using private jets and military aircraft to conduct business on the taxpayers' dime.
Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget, revealed this point in a letter he sent out Friday reminding staff of administrative policies regarding travel after President Trump accepted Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price's resignation.
"Beyond the law and formal policy, departments and agencies should recognize that we are public servants," he wrote. "Every penny we spend comes from the taxpayer. We thus owe it to the taxpayer to work as hard managing that money wisely as the taxpayer must do to earn it in the first place."
"Therefore, all travel on Government-owned, rented, leased, or chartered aircraft, except space available travel and travel to meet mission requirements (as those situations are defined in Circular A-126) shall require prior approval from the White House Chief of Staff," he added.
"Full-time required use travelers are exempted from the requirement," the letter adds.
Price's resignation came after it was revealed he used nearly $1 million in taxpayer dollars to pay for travel on private jets and military aircraft over the past few months. Price has said he will reimburse the government for his seats on these flights totaling approximately $52,000. Other Cabinet officials are facing similar scrutiny over their use of private or military aircraft to travel instead of commercial flights, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.

And the media/republicans/democrats relentlessly mock this president when he speaks of the “SWAMP”.
It’s a culture up in D.C.. Heck, a culture in all levels of gubbamint come to think of it.
Even down to my POA, property owners association I see the same sort of nonsense. Got two liberals running the POA, one is a therapist (50 something grey hair’d guy with a pony tail to his butt) and another retired guy from California (old hippyish kinda fella). Good grief! Tawk about control freaks.
Military hops are an option. Training flights etc... get close and rent a car.
good, what’s wrong with flying commercial
In defense of Price, what he did was normalized in Obama’s years, and to a degree, in years prior.
He knew better.
It’s not about line of succession; HHS is in the line of succession. Here is the official list:
1:Vice President; 2: Speaker of the House; 3: President pro tempore of the Senate; 4: Secretary of State; 5: Secretary of the Treasury; 6: Secretary of Defense; 7: Attorney General; 8: Secretary of the Interior; 9: Secretary of Agriculture; 10: Secretary of Commerce; 11: Secretary of Labor; 12: Secretary of Health and Human Services; 13 Secretary of Housing and Urban Development;
14: Secretary of Transportation; 15: Secretary of Energy; 16: Secretary of Education; 17: Secretary of Veterans Affairs; 17: Secretary of Homeland Security
The last office I should have written “18th”....
Free Upgrades are up to airline. There’s no charge. I suppose if they ran out of burger and offered up filet mignon military personnel were supposed to turn that down too? Sometimes upgrades are offered to make room for cellos, or other seating arrangement (quadruplets) etc...
I took a red eye (shuttle) 777 back to Dulles once, and might have been the only passenger. It was configured for overseas (double crew). I was in uniform and was shown to the crew rest seating, curtains, fully reclinable seats and had a double (on the house) and nice long nap.
Why can’t high-level officials fly coach as well ???
1. Price was not a peon.
2. Security is a bigger deal than the public thinks.
3. The new policy will probably cost more -- but the costs will be hidden. The high-ranking traveler will lose time while waiting for his flight, someone is going to have to fill out requests for approval to take a private plane, layers of bureaucrats will have to review this requests. Taxes will pay the salaries of all of these drones.
On the other hand, it sounds like Prince got captured by the swamp and started showboating with a large head-quarters entourage. For that he should have been fired - where's the reform, Tom? Which department-head heads have rolled? What efficiencies have been effected? What pork has been cut? Tom? Tom?
“I wonder if this will affect Nancy Pelosis government jet to San Fransissyco every weekend or did that end when the House changed hands? “
Yes, and it was a 757, because she didn’t want to have to make a fuel stop en route.
Somewhere, there is also a listing of the booze and food she ordered for each trip home.
“What plane did Bob Menendez and friends use on his jaunts to his teen sex getaways in Dominican Republic.”
That plane is owned by Solomon Melgen the rich doctor who has been lining Menendez’ pockets and providing him with underaged pussy in the Dominican Republic. These are the issues on which he is currently being tried.
Especially this:
Nancy Pelosi caught flak when, as speaker, she flew home to San Francisco on a military airplane.
Pelosi didn't just fly home on a military airplane.
She did it almost every week and carried along a big group of people with her.
Recall Zer0 and Lady McMooch flying to NY on AF-1 to catch a show.
Separate trips for the dog. Separate flights for The Lady when Zer0 was first anointed.
Recall the hubbub about Zer0 and McMooch and Muslims flying separately?
Don’t go to them.
Make them come to you
Actually living high on the hog is irrelevant. The flying flap is but a cover for his real problem. The man was the Obamacare killer. He knew all about it. He is a Physician.
He failed. He is not needed.
That was their "date night" when they flew to the Big Apple aboard a Gulfstream 500, hooked up with a waiting Marine helicopter to fly to Manhattan for dinner and a broadway show.
It was estimated that their "date night" cost taxpayers about $72,000 dollars.
I was a JAG. I figured if I was going to be advising commanders on disciplinary actions for this, I had better comply with the directive myself.
