Villanueva Apologizes for Standing for the National Anthem

Yesterday, Pittsburgh Steeler tackle Alejandro Villenueva was hailed as a hero for seeming to buck the tide of disrespect for the United States that is the flavor du jour in the Roger Goodell’s NFL. While the Steelers cowered in the locker room rather than pretend for a couple of minutes that they were proud to be Americans, Villanueva, West Point graduate, Army Ranger, and decorated combat veteran, stood alone on the sideline.

Now Villanueva says it was all just a big, big mistake. This is via Chris Adamski who covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Kudos to Villanueva for being a hero on the battlefield. Wish that courage and honor for country had carried forth to his NFL career.

Next, the NFL will make him confess to war crimes like our POW’s in Hanoi.

That's essentially what he did.

Villenueva:"I made coach Tomlin look bad, and that is my fault and my fault only. I made my teammates look bad, and that is my fault...only"

I wouldn’t be too hard on the guy. He tried to do his duty, and at the end of the game, his team broke it off in his keister.

He then went to the mics and tried to heal that breach, because after all, its a team sport.

Now he’s getting hammered by the fans. I’m not a fan of Ben Rothlisberger (if that’s how you spell it), but I give him massive credit for coming out a day later and speaking his mind.

I’m sure he had trouble with it, and there are likely others that had issues with it too.

I didn't see a thread, and, no, I didn't even look for a thread. If that bothers you, shove it. The only thing worse than a Libturd Snowflake is a FReeper Thread Snowflake. I'm sick of all of it.

I have a source who tells me there was a big PR damage control and spin meeting in Art Rooney’s office yesterday.

The public statements made later in the day by Villenueva, Ben and Cam Heyward were clearly orchestrated at this meeting. Some sort of half-assed gadget play that ain’t gonna work.

That’s an excellent description!

I watched Villanueva’s news conference a couple of times. He wasn’t explaining. he was apologizing. He even said he didn’t mean to go out for the anthem in the first place! He planned to stay at the end tunnel, but went out a bit too far.

Hear it for yourself, if you can stand it:

He should never have been pressured into apologizing for what he did.

When that damn thing comes in, I'm sending it right back.

Can't you cancel the order?

Would be good to read about how the huge orders for the guy's jersey was unwound with cancellations just as fast.

> If you listen to his whole statement and not selected excerpts, he does not apologize for standing. <

That’s just weak spin on Villanueva’s part. Watch the video of his news conference. He says on the day before the game, he asked if he could stand at the end of the tunnel during the anthem.

Let that sink in! He did not ask for permission to go out onto the field, and honor the flag (as would be normal). He just asked if could stand at the end of the tunnel.

I really want to give Villanueva a pass, considering his remarkable prior service. But he caved here. Ain’t buying his Monday spin.

Here’s his news conference:

I watched it, a couple of times. And I was stunned. FReeper lee martell described it perfectly: Villa sounded like a kidnap victim, reading a note scribbled out by his coach.

I did watch it and I can respect your opinion of it. He has said in past interviews, long before this, that it is personal to him. He wasn’t trying to make himself the center of attention here. I think that what he was trying to articulate when saying he regrets the attention it caused. I think he was trying to be the good (team) soldier and he botched it.

The left media is trying to say he regrets standing for the anthem. That is just not true.

But I do see your point.
