A Roy Moore Ricochet

Roy Moore's likely victory in Tuesday's Alabama Republican Senate primary is expected to embolden like-minded challengers to GOP incumbents next year, reopening a politically perilous intraparty fissure that will sandwich President Donald Trump between anxious party leaders and his boiling base.

Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, has led in every public poll against Sen. Luther Strange, who was appointed to fill the seat of Attorney General Jeff Sessions in February by a scandal-plagued governor. Three new surveys all place Moore up by double digits, solidifying his position as the front-runner.

The problem is that the GOP cannot be reformed. There is a deeply ingrained culture of defeatism, cowardice, and appeasement within the party. Weakness is embedded in the party’s DNA.

Electing a few people here and there is not going to change the party mindset. The GOP only dances to the tune of big money interests. It talks conservative (just before elections) but it always supports the growth of bigger government.

Mitch will try to help the Rat if Moore wins but he’ll have to do it covertly because Trump has already said he is going to campaign for Moore.

It would mean the hold that the GOPe establishment has on selecting who runs has been greatly diminished. IMHO that is a good thing. The voters are taking control.

It happens all the time here in KS - RINOs nominate one of their own in the Primary; when the RINO candidate looses out to the conservative the other RINOs campaign for and vote for the dimocRAT!

Loser RINOs need their own party as they're no way loyal to the GOP only to liberal RINOs!

Tweet from a DC reporter:
“A thought I keep hearing from Capitol reporters: McConnell doesn’t dare pull the Graham-Cassidy bill from the floor until Alabama votes.”

LOL! at the weak Kabuki.

McConnell will do WHATEVER he has to to protect his precious senate.

Back the the Tea Party first elected some Senators and House members, McConnell announced they must marginalize those guy before they get here.

That’s a scary thought. I want that bill voted on. I hope he doesn’t pull it when Moore wins.

“If Moore wins, McConnell will campaign for the Democrat.

I am not being facetious.”

Can anyone tell us if Alabama has a sore loosers law to prevent Strange from pulling a “Lisa Murkowski” and running as a write-in candidate in the General?

“Doesn’t matter. Roy Moore is the epitome of your so-called slur “on Free Republic rational thinking is pretty much out the window, trumped by conservative radical puritanism” against Freepers. “

That’s probably true, and Roy Moore would not have much of a chance against a Luther Strange in most states. I want Moore to win, but everyone who is a “conservative radical puritan” here needs to understand just how narrow his appeal would be most places. You just need do a reality check on demographics in selecting candidates. Akin, Angle and Mourdoch were able to win more localized races within their respective states, but when they went for a statewide office, they were trounced because in the broader electorate they faced, they didn’t have enough appeal because of certain “values” they each held. That may piss you off, but that’s the truth.

They do. If Strange doesn't win the runoff then he's out.

If Moore remains true to what he has been saying then he's a no vote on Graham-Cassidy.

That’s been my take on this election since I became aware of Judge Moore’s candidacy.
PRESIDENT TRUMP did what he had to do to put the republicrats in their place and hopefully get some co-operation.

It won’t matter. Even in a 3 way race Moore will win. Take it to the bank. Also Shelby will retire soon. Needs to retire now IMHO.

It would piss me off if it were true even most of the time. It isn't.
Akin and Angle killed off their candidacies by foot-in-mouth disease, NOT because they were actual conservatives.

I don't remember the specifics of Mourdoch, but overall your premise is a little weak.

That would be a wonderful move. Who’s on deck in AL to take that seat and deprive Bitch McScrotumneck of another butt boy?

I think we saw Yhe move when north Alabama representative Mo Brooks endorsed Moore. I think that was the tell. IDK when Shelby will retire or get primaries.

Well Moore has had some of that with his recent comment to the effect that the hurricanes were “God’s punishment!” Now, if you’re a member of a “church” where snake handling is top of the menu on Sunday, maybe that flies, but to most churchgoers, that would be over the top rhetoric. As I said, I am fine with Moore, but I also believe that someone like him has a narrow constituency. I doubt he’d be on top in say Texas.
