A mass extinction which wipes out humanity will be underway by the year 2100, scientists have claimed.
By the end of the century, its feared that so much carbon will have been added to the oceans that the planet will have passed a threshold of catatastrophe which leads to the destruction of our species.
In the past 540 million years the planet has endured five such wipeouts including the extinction of the dinosaurs.
The worst took place 252 million years ago and is known as the Great Dying.
This disaster killed off more than 95 per cent of marine life when the seas suddenly became more acidic.
Now geophysicist Professor Daniel Rothman says we are seeing a disturbing parallel today this time because of man-made global warming.
He came up with a simple mathematic formula which predict that the oceans will soon hold so much carbon that a mass extinction is inevitable.
It showed the critical extra amount required is about 310 gigatons which is the best case scenario projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). And it's well below the worst of more than 500 gigatons - which would far exceed the line.
In all scenarios, the study found by the end of the century the carbon cycle will either be close to - or well beyond - the threshold for catastrophe.
Although mass extinction won't soon follow at the turn of the century the world may have tipped into "unknown territory".

This is great news. No one else has given us nearly this long!
I’ll check back then.
Watermelons have been proven wrong on so many 10/20/50 year predictions that now they go out 100 years so no one alive today will see how wrong they were.
From the Triassic:
“One theory points to massive lava eruptions during the breakup of the super-continent Pangea, which might have released huge amounts of carbon dioxide, causing runaway global warming. Other scientists suspect asteroid strikes are to blame, but matching craters have yet to be found.”
“Runaway global warming.” Which was corrected, by the planet, all by itself.
Same with the short, intense ice age mentioned in another section. Corrected.
The planet is a self-correcting system, even overcoming “runaway global warming” and ice ages.
I just looked up Dick with ears his picture popped up
laz you beat me to it you sick f
.
I predict that in the year 2301 Bartlett pears will come with purple polka dots.
.
Professor Daniel Rothman .... note that he doesn’t have a job where results are graded!!!!!!
Nah, we’ll be fine, there’s no leap year day in 2100 so his calculations are off.
It is the mainstream media that has made the environment more acidic.
This guy got it right. You predict things that are gonna happen AFTER you die.
Add:
Mass extinctions about 10,600 years ago - cause likely Taurid meteor (one mile diameter fragment of large ‘dark’ comet) ended the Younger Dryas, the coldest period known - glaciers began reforming after previous I mile diameter space rock hit Ice Cap causing massive floods and melting raising temperatures to near present day 1000 years prior.
I saw a show on the Science Channel just a few days ago, that not only predicted, but stated as a matter of fact, that in 10,000 years the Earth would be hotter than Venus!
I was already wondering, though, when the opening comparison of Earth and Venus as “twins” omitted any mention of the disparity in solar distance - AFAIK never mentioned in the program.
Uh huh! But what is his position on Man-made Global Warming? One catastrophe at a time!
If the oceans absorb that much carbon won’t they be coal fields?
There are significant flaws in his math (yes, I’ve read it, and am qualified to judge his work). More important though, he has just guaranteed lifetime funding for his research. Mission accomplished.
I thought the world was supposed to end today? Did I miss it?
Ask him for your degree in Geophysics now and you get your grades in 2100...
When you get your time machine working you can turn back time a year for each year and be a perrenial hero.
“But if you want to make sure this doesn’t happen send us a check.”
