An engineering student who was an LGBTQ activist was shot and killed by Georgia Tech campus police on Saturday night, officials said Sunday.
The school identified the victim as Scout Schultz, 21, a fourth-year engineering student from Lilburn, Georgia, who police said was armed with a knife. Schultz, president of Georgia Tech's Pride Alliance, identified as non-binary and intersex and preferred to be referred to with they/them gender pronouns, according to the alliance's website.
At a news conference Monday, Schultz's family's attorney said the student was experiencing a "mental breakdown" on the night of the shooting.

Still armed, still intent on closing with police officers, still intent on committing suicide.
I guess you really understand what happened to my friend.
I used to explain people’s intentions to him, I wish I had thought to tell him that in any circumstance he could trust the police to have his safety as their priority and that he should always trust them.
After it happened I prayed for my friend and his family...and the officers that had the weight of that horrible thing on their shoulders.
Would a civilian be able to claim that?
Is assisted suicide now acceptable?
How many times do I need to post this? There are two sexes, male and female. Sex is a biological category. There are three genders in the English language: masculine, feminine, and neuter. Gender is a grammatical category, describing nouns and pronouns. Please do not say gender when you mean sex. That is only accepting the terms of discourse dictated by our enemies the gender ideologues.
You mean citizen? Police are civilians, and yes, absolutely. Especially with Stand Your Ground.
Assisted suicide? That takes two willing parties; the police weren’t willing in this case but were forced to. That kid knew they would shoot him and he found out in the last seconds of his life that it hurt as well.
Let me leave you with this. That kid told others that he was suicidal long before this happened. No one did anything until he forced the police to do something. Suicidal people talk about their plans, you just have to be listening.
The freak had been experiencing a “mental breakdown” for years... cut off his sex organs and took female hormones, wrecked his life, wanted to be known as “they” rather than “he” or “she”.... all in all, a total meltdown for years, aided and abetted by some really sick enablers.
Nearly every officer in my agency has had Crisis Intervention Training, a dedicated week long class structured to teach officers to identify and resolve problems with folks with mental illness.
I think it should be two weeks. Officers need to understand that folks with autism for example will often parrot what the officer says, (echolalia) which can be misconstrued as being a wise acre.
Or that autists are runners, and this could lead to misinterpretation, foot pursuits, or God forbid K-9 deployments.
I am a better police officer for having been blessed with a special needs child.
“Armed” is not really a good way to describe someone waving around a closed multi tool. If that’s really the way it was, those cops should have a lot of bad days coming.
I’d say hermaphrodite would be a 4th.
Of that, I am certain.
The 911 caller, which seems to have been “Scout” himself, said the person had both a gun and a knife. So you think in that situation the police are supposed to be able to read the perp’s mind and know every second what he will or won’t do?
It only takes a second or two to “open” a closed knife, and even if officers had any idea the blade was not yet exposed, they could not know the exact size of the weapon and it could be open at any second. A gun could be drawn from a pocket at any second. The distance between “Scout” and the officer who fired could be crossed in a couple of seconds max.
A friend of mine from high school was later stabbed to death (by her deranged boyfriend), it only took seconds from what I understand. I wish someone could have shot that guy before he took her life.
Sounds like a ramblin trainwreck
I also question the “reports” aspect.
“Reports” had Michael Brown’s hands up.
When you are stressed out in public, the police are NOT your friend. From many of the recent cases I’ve seen, they may very well shoot you if you are acting “crazy” and have any sort of weapon.
It is extremely difficult for a police officer to unerringly gauge what is going on inside the mind of a disturbed individual. For “normal” people, it seems very simple: If a police officer says to drop something, you drop it. Can always discuss whether the cop was correct or not to demand that you drop it - later, when things have calmed down.
For a disturbed person, such a “simple” directive may not be easy to follow. But the cop can’t know that. The cop’s #1 job is public safety. If the armed individual is reasonably perceived as a threat, and does not comply with a directive to disarm - and then advances, deadly force may be necessary. As appears in this case.
Tough choices that come with the territory...
