No. The AG is not independent of the President. He fired the head of the FBI; he can fire the AG, and he can certainly tell the AG what to concentrate on.

Thank you for the clarification. Actually that makes me feel better about it - Trump isn’t going back on his words, he’s just being stonewalled.
I will NOT forget that he came close to firing Sessions a couple of months back and that the ENTIRE Senate blocked him from an interim appointment.
Yes actually trump does have express authority to order the justice dept to investigate whatever he thinks needs investigating. Trump is the boss of the justice dept.
