We quit watching years ago. A losing proposition except for certain individuals who will always make big bucks out of it. I’d work to ensure the games DIDN’T come to my town.
Win the Olympics and lose billions. Plus the roads will be closed whenever you want to go somewhere.
LA is one of the few cities that does it correctly- rather than spending billions on new facilities they used existing facilities...worked well for them in 1984 when i was there and i expect much the same in 11 years...
But I will say this, the Colosseum ALWAYS sells out when the Mexican National Soccer Team plays a game there.
I heard that Peter Ueberoth(sp?) ran the Olympics in 1984 so efficiently that they actually made a profit for LA. Is that true? Where is he today? Can we get someone with business acumen to run the games again?
At some point in the last 25 years — and it may have been after the Atlanta bombing in 1996 and after 9/11 when security became a much bigger issue in places where large crowds are gathered — a lot of sporting events simply became more disruptive than they were worth for the places hosting them.
Boy, I need to get out of this city by 2020. I’m beginning to hate it.
I was there in 1984, and they did a fine job. They also did it on the cheap. That doesn’t mean they will do a fine job again, but it shows that it can be done.
Uberoth did not just turn a profit, he saved the Olympics...see my post above as to how he did it...he also brought commercialism into the game and had corporate sponsorship of events and facilities- which was not allowed in the past...
the IOC realizes they are in trouble and need to do something- the fact they are opening the bank account and giving cities $180 million to run the Olympics is proof of this...
Having all the Commie countries boycott probably helped keep the costs low, as well.
most of the facilities are already in place and don’t need to be built rather refurbished...the huge cost today they didn’t have to deal with in 1984 is security...
i’ve been to the Olympics four times including LA, and had a blast at all, though Atlanta was over the top with the commercialism and everyone trying to make a buck...
I’d like to bring Mitt Romney in ... keeping him busy doing something useful.
I remember walking out my front door and watching the bicycle races in Mission Viejo—so great.
Spreading out the events all over the metro area worked well.
Of course, that was a few million illegal aliens ago...
Yep President Pence will open the games with fanfare!
Home team paying a visit?
Or pull in Mitt Romney and keep that schmuck OUT of politics . . .
From what I understand, hosting the Olympics has never really been a winning proposition for any city.
