Hurricane Irma turns lush green Caribbean Islands brown

Hurricane Irma churned across the Atlantic Ocean in September 2017, battering several Caribbean islands before moving on to the Florida Keys and the U.S. mainland. As the clouds cleared over places like the Virgin Islands, the destruction became obvious even from space.

These natural-color images, captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite, show some of Irma’s effect on the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. The views were acquired on August 25 and September 10, 2017, before and after the storm passed. They are among the few relatively cloud-free satellite images of the area so far.

The most obvious change is the widespread browning of the landscape. There are a number of possible reasons for this. Lush green tropical vegetation can be ripped away by a storm’s strong winds, leaving the satellite with a view of more bare ground. Also, salt spray whipped up by the hurricane can coat and desiccate leaves while they are still on the trees.

Irma passed the northernmost Virgin Islands on the afternoon of September 6. At the time, Irma was a category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles (295 kilometers) per hour. According to news reports, the islands saw “significant devastation.”

Same thing happened to a women visiting a beach in Italy last week. Beat and raped her right there on the beach in broad daylight.

The woman is from Poland, and it was a BIG story in Poland.

Been to the Caribbean fairly recently but i remember back in 1990 buying a Red Stripe beer at my beach side hotel bar for literally pennies thinking that this one beer is probably what the bartender makes in an hour, maybe a day.

Have been reading about how Mexican resort bartenders have been drugging the visitors and taking advantage with their cohorts, i imagine the natives really resent the tourists and their supposed wealth.

I overheard a man at a restaurant saying to his friend that "...visiting Mexico now is very risky with so many greaser Mexicans that are rapists and killers."

Trump mentioned the Mexican rapists and he was right on mark!

Why do you feel “arabs” were responsible for the rapes?

HGTV (Home and Garden TV) has many programs of people seeking island living, like in the US and British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos. Wonder how people will feel now about moving to those “paradise” settings which they “dream” about.

Yes, the different water color is a problem with the images.
Makes me think the land color change may not be as dramatic as we are expected to think it is.

Google earth is updated once every few years. I saw my pickup truck in our cul-de-sac in the same position for seven years.
