A Chappaquiddick Reckoning At Last?

Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman, piles on:

“Chappaquiddick” is a meticulously told chronicle, no more and no less, and at times there’s a slight detachment in watching it, because it’s too tough and smart to milk the situation by turning Edward Kennedy into a “tragic figure.” . . .

Forty-eight years later, let’s be clear on what the meaning of Chappaquiddick is. Ted Kennedy should, by all rights, have stood trial for involuntary manslaughter, which would likely have ended his political career. The fact that the Kennedy family — the original postwar dynasty of the one percent — possessed, and exerted, the influence to squash the case is the essence of what Chappaquiddick means.

The Kennedys lived outside the law; the one documented instance in American history of an illegally stolen presidential election was the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960. He lost the race to Richard Nixon, but his father sealed the presidency for him by manipulating the vote tallies in Illinois. That’s the meaning of Chappaquiddick. too.

JOHN adds: Ted Kennedy was a coward. He left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown, and walked back, a long distance, to the house where his party was still in progress. When he arrived there, he importuned his cousin, Joe Gargan, to tell the police Gargan had been driving the car. Gargan refused, and insisted that they return to Poucha Pond and see whether Kopechne could be rescued. Kennedy agreed, but was of no use. He sat on the bank while his cousin tried unsuccessfully to dive down to the sunken car.

(To the tune of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”)

When she’s pregnant,
When you’re in a fix,
When Gallup’s on your back,
Pray to Brother Jack.
He’ll bail you out,
Oh, and you’ll find out,
Your troubles can be drowned.
At the Bridge over Chappaquiddick,
You will lay her down.

If he and the Kennedy family had ethics, he never would have gone on to a life as a public figure. If he wanted to atone, there were many better ways to help the world while keeping an appropriately and deservedly low profile.

Now I'm hungry for a mortadella, provolone, and tomato sandwich on Tuscan bread, with a glass of Nero d’Avola.

#9 re a movie about Hillary. THEY DID. It was called “The Thing” and like her second book, the followup to “The Thing” was “The Beast With a Thousand Eyes”.

Can’t wait for the last of Hillary’s trilogy. It will be entitled, like the film, “The Return of the Swamp Thing”.

Popcorn. Get your hot popcorn!

Fake news:

Kennedy would have won the presidency even if Nixon had won Illinois’ electoral votes.

I’d like to see this almost 60 year old lie put to rest.

Illinois alone wasn’t enough, that’s true. What about Texas?

One theory I hadn’t considered, at the Wiki article on this debacle.

Teddy wasn’t driving. What happened, so the story goes - there was a cop who saw them parked somewhere and was going to check them out. This part is documented. Teddy got spooked, and didn’t want to get caught with a woman who was not his wife, as a US Senator, etc. So he took off running and Mary Jo was unfamiliar with the big car and the roads, and ended up driving off the bridge.

And a restaurant in New London, too. I was at that restaurant with my ex girlfriend...(no, I didn’t drove off a bridge with her, I broke up with her...) and I saw the waitress sandwich.

What always gets me is this timeline.

He leaves the party at 11:30 (more or less). Two minute drive up and he should have turned left (but instead turned right). It’s a 3/4 mile drive to the point where he runs into the water.

So, then (figure 11:40 at latest), he pulls himself out and walks all the way back to the cottage (in the dark). Drunk guy. You can figure that this took at least 30 min (taking him to 12:20 at the least). He lingers at the cottage (no one around apparently). Maybe it’s five minutes....maybe it’s twenty minutes. Then he starts walking to the ferry point. It’s a fifty minute walk minimum, assuming he doesn’t get turned around or lost. He gets to the ferry and then finds no way across....so he says that he swims across. It’s a quarter-mile space of water. A fit guy in the middle of the night....half-drunk? You can figure at least 15 minutes...maybe 25 minutes.

I just don’t see him back at the hotel at 2AM. Not unless someone drives him along. My humble opinion is that there was a third-person in the vehicle, and this person helped to drive him over to the ferry landing. I don’t believe the wrong turn story or the timeline. It just doesn’t work.

The easiest way is to post the complete URL in the reply box.

It will automatically be made a clickable link, as long as you don’t include any HTML code in your reply.

And people will see the actual URL and can decide whether or not they want to click on it.

In some cases you may want to use the method at #76, such as if the URL is super-long

“Fat, drunk and stupid, like Bluto from Animal House, is no way to go through life.”

Dean Wormer’s “fat, drunk, and stupid” line was directed at the Kent Dorfman/Flounder character, played by the recently-deceased Stephen Furst. John Blutarsky/Bluto, played by John Belushi, is shown driving away in a closing credit as achieving exactly what Teddy did: US Senator with a trophy wife. Humor always requires an element of “truth” in order to be really funny.
