The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

Irma may have passed just to the east of Key West. I bet some of the more eastern keys had a higher storm surge.

They have to forecast what the models show.
If they underestimate and there is more damage and loss of life, they’ll be castigated for it.
Better to prepare for the worst and fnd out it wasn’t needed. Then just be grateful instead of criticizing.
And anyone who thinks they can do it better can just step up to the plate and show everyone how it’s done.
From your lips to God's ears. That said, there is no way to know just yet, will have to wait for the morning. I remember right after Hurricane Andrew passed, the news media was showing video of the scant damage in Miami, for about 12 hours. They declared the storm a poofter. Then they went down to Homestead........
Well said.

My nieces laughed last year when I pulled out my flip phone. :)
Which Zello channel are you on?
HAHA
its your fault...
you ducked the hurricanes and they followed you here...
I’m not actually there. We are at our TN summer escape home.
Just watching the camera in my FL house.
Well, then good.
Joe Bistardi, who i trust more than any other forecaster, missed the jot to the east. Hand of God, freak of nature? Take your pick.
Bastardi, that is...
Anyone have any info on the Fort Myers area?
The Accuweather radar looks like the eye is over them.
Yes, she is.
On the first hurricane thread people were making fun of a model by Joe Bastardi showing exactly that. Showed it hitting Miami, going south of FL, then north a little, crossing back across the state, and then up the east coast to NJ. It was generally the path of Hurricane Donna, I guess. I confess I know absolutely nothing about hurricanes.
It looks that way to me.
I think they thought they were off the hook when Irma overshot and missed landfall at Miami.
And I think the rest of the state breathed a sigh of relief when it didn’t come straight up the middle of the state.
There was some early criticism of the east coast evacuating when the storm was going to hit the Gulf side, but based on what I’ve been seeing, the east coast is getting HAMMERED. Lots of water being driven ashore, and lots of tornadoes.
The southern part of the stae has been getting pounded since Irma started beating on Cuba then as it somewhat stalled and pivoted in its turn to the north.
The evacuations were wise even if you are not in the path of the eye itself.
This storm is a monster.
You ok? We’re sure getting slammed by tornados, eh? As I type that we got another warning beep. All night.
Another one for Daytona.
I’m there! Nasty winds, flooding in fort pierce, transformers blowing everywhere.
It seems to me that the thing has turned to the north east and may come back to go up the Atlantic coast. Two of the current models are showing that, too. Of course it is downgraded now, but I’m not sure it is going to the Mississippi.
