Hurricane Irma Live Thread III
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.

Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

We are going to have amazing video for the ages with this storm. I saw a video of two guys standing in an empty bay. It was flat out incomprehensible . Will try to find the clip.

As you and others have mentioned concrete block construction, I will use a reply to explain to those not familiar with construction the variables to understand when you see masonry units like concrete block

My son and I decided that his NW Dade home is built well enough to withstand Cat 4. Wish I knew the exact construction, but it made it through the edge of Andrew and subsequent early 2000s storms without any damage. I doubt it's from reinforced block, but who knows - Graham Co. construction, so hopefully at least to pre-Andrew code, as was their reputation when I bought it in '89.

When this storm showed Cat 5 and heading towards Miami, my son agreed to find shelter - he's spending the storm in a secure data center in Kendall. He's got a cool view through a large impact window w steel mesh. Says not much unusual there so far w/ winds/rain to be expected from radar view. So we've spent the morning trading jokes about Hialeah hurricane preparations:

The networks saying, “Police will not respond to any calls” might as well have been, “Hey homies! Get yo a** out dere an’ git u some!”

And they would put them where, exactly? This isn’t the North. Garages are not ubiquitous.

Pool folks recommend furniture be stored inside somewhere or secured to something if there is a chance of bad weather and you have a vinyl liner.

The old-school expedient way to rapidly secure pool lounges and deck furniture when bad windy weather is approaching is to throw them into the pool. Of course, that's not with a vinyl liner, that's with a better quality pool made of Gunite or tile.
