Hurricane Irma Live Thread III
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/09/2017 2:08:31 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.

Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

>>The problem is armchair experts who expect pinpoint accuracy when it is impossible, and hold others accountable (meteorologists) for factors they cannot control (weather).

Agree wholeheartedly metmom, and I encourage anyone who disagrees to see my comment here:

Again, I’m amazed the meteorologists do as well as they do.

I am thankful for this thread. I have been monitoring these hurricanes with FR. I woke up this morning and turned on network news, what mindless drivel.
My wife’s best friend lives in Bonita Springs. Her 80 plus year old in laws just moved to Bonita Springs from Kentucky three weeks ago. When the track showed an east coast land fall they decided to stay.

Last radar scan dropped 12 minutes behind realtime. NWS at Key West is losing bandwidth noticably.

The section where the water us bursting through windows...stuff nightmares are made of, especially for someone afraid of the water.

Here is my GoPro camera VIDEO of Hurricane Irma from north central Broward County at 8:10 AM today. Wind moving from east to west due to counterclockwise rotation of the hurricane but I expect that wind direction to change to south to north as Irma moves further north. Currently wind gusts up to about 65 mph in this area. You can see one of those gusts in the second half of this video.

As you can see, tree branches have fallen. Since recording this video another big branch fell off the tree nearest the camera.

If I have electricity later, I will try to post more such videos here.

What web cam are you watching. Most I’ve been looking at are loops from yesterday of last night. When you click on the Mallory Square one you can see the same guy every time in the lower right corner. The one on Duval street is still showing the downtown as dark.

Excellent post!
Forecasting a monster like this is imperfect at best.It takes real talent to put all the variables together and even than its not an exact science. These guys do an excellent job,IMHO.

Agreed. Scott has done a decent job here. Triumph of function over form.

Any ideas the elevation on US1 in the Keys? Was trying to remember what flooding was like down there post Wilma. Any modifications/ improvements since then?

If the hurricane never came ashore and no US damage occurred I wonder how much has been spent in preparedness and evacuation? Is the evacuation and hotel expense, etc. covered in one’s homeowner policy?

It’s not petty to be concerned about lives. And small ones that we take responsibility for especially. I trust people to have sense, or to have people who take responsibility for them, to have sense. And there will always be good people outside the event who will worry for those people. So I will worry about the small ones who can’t take care of themselves. And I will always contribute to animal shelters during these horrible events. May every Hemmingway cat have a caring person who scoops it up and acts as its angel.

I work in the industry. This storm is hitting a path about as bad as it could. If it had gone up the east coast it would have been equally bad as it would have hit Savannah, Hilton Head and Chalreston.

That was because the competition had been destroyed. The decline afterwards was because we have to compete with newer factory

Elevation is all over the place from zero to 14 feet, more zero than 14 of course. Many of the homes are built on concrete or wooden stilts at least 11 feet above zero.

I have seen a foot of water on Duval Street from a severe thunderstorm. I don’t expect a huge storm surge because of the off-shore reefs that have a tenancy to knock the waves down. And while I expect a big clean-up in Key West, I do not expect “catastrophic” damage — except in the minds of the ratings driven media.

Our building codes are actually second to none. Wind requirements are 130 and above and keep going up. Many impact windows being installed every day.
