Marin County man arrested in fatal shooting of doe, fawn caught eating his yard plants
Press Democrat ^ | 8 Sept 2017

TIBURON — A resident of an exclusive San Francisco Bay neighborhood is the target of online outrage and may face criminal charges for shooting to death a doe and its fawn that were eating newly installed landscaping.

Tiburon police arrested Mark Dickinson, 54, shortly after 5 a.m. on Sept. 2. Officers were responding to a report of a suspicious person when they found two severely injured deer in the street near Dickinson's bay-view home. The animals died a short time later.

Officers arrested Dickinson after they determined he shot the deer several times with a high-powered pellet gun with scope, laser and flashlight attachment, according to chief Michael Cronin.

Cronin said Dickinson told officers he meant to scare away the deer, which were eating decorative plants. Dickinson was booked and released from jail Sept. 2.

Dickinson's lawyer Charles Dresow said the killing was an accident.

"My client did not intend to harm the animals," Dresow said in an email. "The public outrage related to these allegations is driven by the inflammatory claims of the Tiburon Police Department which haven't been proven in Court.

Peace and pretty landscaping THROUGH SUPERIOR FIREPOWER.

Point well taken. In the absence of natural predators, the state needs to increase the hunting season.

You have no idea; most counties in California DO REGULATE AIR PISTOLS AND RIFLES.
One of my Sons friends got arrested for practicing in his own back yard.
My question to this day is WHERE WAS THE FIRE, IT WAS AN AIR RIFLE.
The young man’s charges were discharging a WEAPON within city limits.

Deer are nothing more than long legged RATS, you obviously don’t have a large deer population in your area.

In my neighborhood in the HooDoo Valley, you’d best make use of tall fences or similar measures to keep Bambi and her friends out of your young trees and gardens. They love gladiolas.

“Deer eat my flowers, Bobcat eat the deer, I just don’t spend much on flowers.
I live in a pretty inclusive place, all sorts of critters.”

We live in an East Bay (that’s San Francisco Bay) community. it was as hot as 115 last week. Our property is home to as many as a dozen deer. We had a spike buck take refuge on the west deck of our home for three days straight to keep himself sheltered from the unusually high temperatures. When he left in the evening, we put out a large galvanized tub of water for him. Yeah, they do do some damage to our landscaping, but they are still a welcome addition to our neighborhood. So is the flock of wild turkeys who “take the tour” of our neighborhood on a weekly basis. I hope this a$$hole does some time.

Earlier in the spring a little Fawn ran up out of the creek bed and took a really close look at me.
It was really funny, I’m sure I was the first human it had ever seen.

Yeah, deer seem to think that by simply standing stone still, that they are not seen. That’s also why they are often victims of being hit be cars. “The deer caught in the headlights” is a very true statement, coupled with an inane problem of running the wrong direction trying to exit.

There are pellet guns and there are pellet guns:

Sam Yang Big Bore 44
0.45" caliber, 730 fps max, 3,000 psi charge, 237 ft-lbs energy, 200 grain pellet (up to 300 gr), rifled steel barrel (0.4516" to 0.4567" diameter)

Compare to 177 caliber "normal" pellets below (what mostpeople think of as a "pellet"):

Yup. I’m well aware of that little factoid.

And long term planning accordingly...

Oh brother. Just how gay do you have to be to this sort of setup? I'm willing to bet if Gay Guy 1 had an actual GUN he probably would have resorted to scaring the deer out of his beloved garden.

In much of the country, Deer are locally overpopulated and suppress each young forest growth and the population of a wide array of other species.

There were some studies under the auspices of the Smithsonian, that showed deer reduced the number of songbirds and small animals by about 90% compared to where the deer were excluded.

There are parts of the country where there have been no surviving saplings in over a decade.

...Not to mention the issues with the health of the herds themselves. If there’s no hunting of deer, then there need to be wolves and mountain lions and such in the area.

My problem is the pellet gun. Yes, it is animal cruelty. In addition to the fine, he should have his ass kicked. Maybe OK with something that stings but won't penetrate, but yeah.
