TIBURON A resident of an exclusive San Francisco Bay neighborhood is the target of online outrage and may face criminal charges for shooting to death a doe and its fawn that were eating newly installed landscaping.
Tiburon police arrested Mark Dickinson, 54, shortly after 5 a.m. on Sept. 2. Officers were responding to a report of a suspicious person when they found two severely injured deer in the street near Dickinson's bay-view home. The animals died a short time later.
Officers arrested Dickinson after they determined he shot the deer several times with a high-powered pellet gun with scope, laser and flashlight attachment, according to chief Michael Cronin.
Cronin said Dickinson told officers he meant to scare away the deer, which were eating decorative plants. Dickinson was booked and released from jail Sept. 2.
Dickinson's lawyer Charles Dresow said the killing was an accident.
"My client did not intend to harm the animals," Dresow said in an email. "The public outrage related to these allegations is driven by the inflammatory claims of the Tiburon Police Department which haven't been proven in Court.

Throw in a,quiet pellet gun, and you’ve got rabbit stew any time you want it.
That’s a long term plan...
A black rifle in San Francisco? The horror! On the other hand, I’m surprised a pellet gun would do the job.
“he shot the deer several times with a high-powered pellet gun with scope, laser and flashlight attachment...”
An assault pellet rifle!
They didn’t mention if it was black.
I’m on the side of the deer, especially fawns for heavens’ sake. But my SIL thinks I’m nuts, calls them “Rats on Stilts.”
I used to have a lot of Hostas around the property. I don’t have any left. There are twin fawns behind the house every late afternoon and they’re (with the mama) eating weeds and that’s good...Can’t believe their hearing. I can be doing dishes and they stop what they’re doing and look toward the window.
Not in my yard...
You would kill a beautiful coyote without thought?
Wow
I grew up in Marin in the 60’s. I lived in Marinwood. Deer would stroll in herds down the suburban streets eating cafeteria style as they went.
One year some entity authorized bow hunting in the area.
That helped greatly.I understand the meat was donated to a local orphanages.
Think a doe and fawn can be pests, try living where I do, we have deer, elk, and occasional Mt. Lion, wolves, bear, coyotes, fox, coon, and many more, Even though some eat just plants, those that don’t are just a destructive. They can make a real mess of a lot of stuff. I’d stay here anytime.!
Robin Williams contended that “Tiburon” was Spanish for “condominium.”
It’s not just not having a tag, using a pellet gun is not a legal method of hunting deer in CA. So it could be considered animal cruelty. Also there is nothing that says game laws can only be enforced by DFG agents. Any LEO can enforce CA fish and game laws if they encounter violations.
Years ago I had a small doe that tried to jump my fence, and it broke it’s leg. Of course I put it out of it’s misery. It was delicious.
I've hunted deer for over 50 years. I've got no problem with the guy shooting them. My problem is the pellet gun. Yes, it is animal cruelty. In addition to the fine, he should have his ass kicked.
Same here. I have welded-wire fence around all my small trees, and chain-link and electric wire around my garden.
Deer, coons, beavers (the worst), moose and a bear have visited at times. Also turkeys, ducks, geese, cranes and, in the big trees, bald and golden eagles.
I’ve been driving through the Rockies for a quarter century now, usually at night, and have yet to hit an animal.
When I do, if I survive, I expect I’ll figure I share in the blame. They were around long before I-90 (and my yard) got here.
Excepting medical research, there just is no good reason to torture animals, not even ones eating the shrubberies. Its not like deer proof planting is some big secret. This is a "nice" area? He should have sued his contractor/landscaper to correct it assuming he had enough sense to specify, if not then he needs to hire one to correct it. Dont plant your yard full of bait and animals wont come eat it. On top of that, its out of season, we have seasons for a reason.
Then again...
I bet he isnt the kind that pushes for urban archery and bigbore airgun in public parks. Many communities have far too many deer because of too many bambi huggers but, some places have poor wildlife management services and sometimes people have to take matters into their own hands. As EEE mentioned, all of NE WI is buried in deer, herds of them. The North half of the city of Green Bay, both sides, is swarming with deer and turkeys. Hitting a deer screws up your car, having a 20lb turkey swoop from "nowhere" in the oaks above and smash your windshield makes you $h!t your pants. If he had pushed for such things I would feel for the guy.
I think what really turns me against this guy is that he apparently just let them stumble and stagger off. If he had been caught while packing them in the freezer I would have given the guy the benefit of the doubt in being a good guy who made a bad decision.
Its always hard to say how complete and truthful these stories are but, since didnt use and probably doesnt have the tools and made no effort to correct the bad choice (he could have froze the meat and brought it into a pantry/shelter if he didnt want it) then hes probably a metrosexual NIMBY, and thinks himself better than the unwashed masses and so deserves to have his balls screwed to wall.
How could you! /s
They are over populated hugely here.
Last year I lost twelve thousand dollars worth of new trees to bucks rubbing the bark off.
The stand on hay bales and pee on them and then the cattle won't eat it. So its a bigger deal than a few flowers.
I see a few nice houses to left of center but he whole right side looks like Eloi hives. Whats the backside of the lake look like?
