Chinese residents concerned over NK nuclear tests, fallout

Chinese residents continued to express concern over nuclear fallout, even as Chinese environmental officials said North Korea's sixth nuclear test had no effect on China's environment or health.
"My friends and I are very worried about North Korea's constant nuclear tests. We are near North Korea," a resident from Yanji, Yanbian, 10 kilometers from the border between China and North Korea, told the Global Times on Thursday.
A resident surnamed Liu from East China's Shandong Province said that she refuses to eat rice from Northeast China, because the rice might be contaminated by nuclear radiation.
Another resident surnamed Shi from Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province said she has been trying to persuade her parents to move to Central China's Henan Province, where she works and is far from the North Korean border.
However, the older generation in Northeast China is less worried.
"Despite these nuclear tests, I see nothing wrong with people in North Korea. So I think we are OK," said 51-year-old Lü, adding that his generation is used to the situation.
North Korea carried out its sixth nuclear test on Sunday, with many Jilin residents saying they were rattled by the tremor created by the explosion.
China's Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) has implemented an emergency plan since Sunday, which includes an inspection of the radiation levels in Northeast China.
MEP said on Wednesday that the nuclear test did not cause damage to the environment and public health.
The ministry also said it will continue its inspections and provide environmental data online.
Scientists measured the latest nuclear test was 3 to 7.8 times more powerful than the bomb the US dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.

I would say that when people voice concerns in public, there’s a good chance they’ve gotten approval or direction from the government to voice them.
This may not be as negative as you think, but I’d like to hear your thought on that.
At some point I honestly think China is going to realize that North Korea is harming it not only harming in the international community but in the domestic community too.
Is this criticism or concern buttressing grounds for China to justify taking actions of their own?
I make no claims of this being the precise reality. I wonder if it couldn’t be part of the dynamics in play none the less.

I know some of you folks are better situated to read these things, so about all I can do is speculation what it looks like to me, and let you folks explain where you think I missed the mark or need to have my view tweaked a bit, if you don’t agree.

Would it be wrong for me to cheer on a full scale Chinese invasion of North Korea that will replace that nutcase Kim with a moderate?
I keep hoping China has a sniper that can reach out and touch Kim.
I trust the Chinese government about as far as I can drop kick it.
That being said, I don’t think they want a full out East vs West confrontation now, or perhaps more accurately YET.
I suspect their desires for North Korea aren’t that different than ours, but I have to state that I think China was a lot more complicit in North Korea’s programs than is publicly acknowledged here, elsewhere, or in China.
It would seem apropos that China would have to confront it’s own “mini-me” dictator. Let Kim and China deal with the irony of that.
If China takes the measures to neutralize North Korea, it may save our ally South Korea from having as much negative actions taken against it. Hopefully that would save a lot of lives.
Being in a position to thank China for that giving credit were credit was due would be a decent situation for China and the U.S. And if things did go South and South Korea was attacked from the North (by N.K.), the U.S. wouldn’t get the full blame for having forced a situation. China would have done it.
If China acted in a decent manner trying to get North Korea under control much the same as we would, if we did it, it would probably be the best way to handle it for U.S. interests. However, we would need to be sharp and make sure China didn’t execute grand designs on the South.
I don’t think there’s a perfect end to this. Korea needs to be a nuclear free zone again.
Neither the U.S. or South Korea have grand designs on North Korea, or China for that matter. I think China realizes that.
We don’t expect North Korea to instantly become like South Korea, but if the North is brought under control and a reunification were facilitated later on, it might actually become like a South Korea when unified.
I think a unified Korea might make China a reasoned neighbor.
Hong Kong and Macau may be good examples of what China could expect, even though Korea would not be officially a part of China now as they are (at least administratively).
I don’t think China has to fear a Westernized region on it’s border. Hong Kong and Macau (if I understand Macau accurately) were Western areas for decades, and they did not try to turn into a thorn in China’s side.
