When Katrina passed over south Florida (going west), she strengthened. I don’t think there is a good answer as each storm seems to behave differently over that area.
I’m having a devil of a time getting Florida 511 to load. If other folks, especially those evacuating, are having similar problems, hope they’ve got. Delorme Gazetteer for FL...
I have read that because much of South Florida is not “land”, it is warm swampland, that it’s effect on a hurricane is reduced. By how much, I do not have a clue, but I would think that NHC takes it into account.
I live in north-central Broward county. My sister-in-law lives in western Miami. Yesterday my wife told me that her sister needed for me to pick up a few gallons of water at the store and bring it down to her in Miami. Yeah...riiiight.
At that point I told my wife it would be just a wee bit easier if her sister filled up bottles from the same source as most bottled water...namely the tap.
I have family in Tampa, St. Pete, Winter Haven, Lake Wales, Lakeland, and Gainesville. We are all keeping an eye on things as they progress. I’m hearing there is still gas available, but getting harder to find. Water is nonexistent at stores. Several of them have generators, and some of the family is still working on getting more supplies like batteries and food.
In case this idea can help someone else out, I’m posting what we do in our family for emergencies. We establish one person who is the furthest from the active area to contact and let know whether someone is safe or needs help. That person stays in touch with each family throughout the storm’s progression and aftermath.
Not much. Don’t forget this about storm surge. It is not just the ocean which experiences storm surge but the water table as well. All of FL is an aquafer. The hurricane will raise the inland water table substantially -feet, as it passes..
“Are there RV dealers who let people take their RVs away to escape in order to keep their inventory safe? I not, they should.”
I think RV dealerships are insured to the point they probably make money on destroyed inventory.
I wonder how the fact gfs comes out every four hours vs ecmwf comes out every twelve hours affects predictions.
Looks to be Ground Zero.
Been there numerous times.
Was a jump off spot on a sailing trip to Bimini.
Used to put in and sail just on the other side on Goliath Grouper Creek ( did they change the name Jewfish Creek?).
Sailed Blackwater Sound hundreds of times. My old 'stomping grounds'
Card Sound Road is awash in a strong easterly breeze.
I'll qualify that, haven't been there since 1984.
Thank you. Shows up much better now. I am back on a bigger screen.
If anyone needs a place to shelter pets in Chattanooga, Ark Pet Spa has a discount for evacuees. (Assuming you are going this far.) Link for any interested:
Good afternoon. Thanks for the thread.
Someone mentioned a yacht club.
Bahia Mar in Ft. Lauderdale looked like a collection of match sticks after Cleo.

Question for anyone..what exactly make everyone think that Irma is going to take a sharp turn to the north at some predefined time?
Western NC here, Charlotte area. We missed Hugo (living up north at the time). Serious question: I know they have us in a state of emergency, but would we need to evaluate this far inland?
