Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Sort of funny, I feel very exposed out in the Great Plains, those cold fronts come down, the wind just howls all winter long, and the crazy thunderstorms and frequent tornadoes. But, my favorite place on earth is the Outer Banks, barrier islands, way on out there, most out of sight from the mainland. It's not too awfully different, the wind is always there but it's a sea breeze, it's warm nine months out of the year. There are good sized dunes, largest on the east coast, and live oaks set back from the beach where storm overwash tends to keep them killed back.
The sky, though, it's huge. The sunrise over the Atlantic, the sunset over the sounds, the colors, the stars at night, you can still see the Milky Way. Nothing like stargazing by a beach bonfire. You're cheating yourself. The ocean can get pretty wild, yes, particularly on Hatteras where it's just normally that way every day. Beautiful though, so primal.
Do you know the current max wind now?
Last time it was 125 mph
RIght small skiff big push pole, stealthish hull.

I wonder if Midnight Pass in Sarasota will be reopened by this hurricane .
It was closed by Hurricane back in the 1960’s and people wanted to it back open for decades but people built Mansions on it .
How come when I look at that all I think is the old hip hop song ‘they see me rollin’, they hatin’
Crunch time is coming. Is the turn happening ? How much of a turn?
I read a book once about a building crumbling during a hurricane
It was written by Iva Crackatoe
Did you note the buoy off to the left of the Marathon point bouncing all over? That is one of the more fascinating cams since I began watching those I’ve found....it makes a huge difference too when you adjust the quality and run it at least movie screen.
Comments??
Google Earth weather , Cold Front Yucatan to Jacksonville and points North. Sharp line of demarkation of storm hitting Buffer???
Any Comment on a possible abrupt change of Course to NE??
We previously have had hurricanes do loops over Florida!
“Do you know the current max wind now?
Last time it was 125 mph”
Still 125 mph.
Hey bud,How are ya. Hoping my kids don’t lose it all during the storm or me for that matter. We will wind up being on either side of the storm unless she is directly in the eye.
Thank you!
I still think the hurricane shoulda been named Horace
cause my gut says she is going west young man
Prayers for you and your family and friends
Lol - I meant flat ground with no mountains, not used to it!
I know it’s intensifying but maybe the fact part of it is over land in Cuba and part of the outer band hitting land in South FLA is slowing it from really kicking in right now?
It’ll turn up once it moves fully off of the coast of Cuba.
Holy cow! I remember that book. Scummy real estate guys, shady politicians, buildings that shouldn’t have been built.
A perfect book for a summer house bookcase.
But his description of the storm and the power of water...that’s why I remember it.
Here is what I could find off “somewhat” local buoys”:
tortugas 29 knots sustained 33 gusts
baro29.57 air temp 85.5—baro fell 40 points since noon
..............
sand key off key west 29.44 baro falling fast
..........
molasses of key largo as of 3:00 pm
43knots sustained 49 gusts
29.47
water temp. 85.6
Most of the NOAA buoys we need don’t work or don’t exist.
See those two T top center console boats in the high Marathon webcam? Those boats are so dead -lol. Definitely insured. It’s coming up on low tide. Just add 8 hr.s and 12 feet to the picture and that’s what’ll it be at midnight.
thanks bud lets hope.
