Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Still at work. Trying to take a quick peek at developments. It appears we may be seeing a slight shift west. Does this seem accurate? I’m just telling people to focus on THE CONE and try to ignore spaghetti :) And yet...I’m looking at them!
Shift would be be very serious for S.Fl. and really...the whole state.
Don’t hang your hat on the one model run going more westward. Hang in until 5PM update.
Actually on tower cranes they have to let them swing in the wind. If they leave the boom fixed or try to tether it the boom acts like a sail and brings the tower down in the later case or twists it down in the former case.
Company I was with 23 years ago had a luffing boom on a track mounted crane (almost as big as a ‘ringer’) and they left it partially locked one night and a tornado hit it. The near vertical boom tried to rotate around, brooke the king pin and came down on the hospital alongside of it.
I had a 175 foot boom on my last project. I actually had it pre-set up for a lay-down, which is something they are not designed to do, but I was on an air base and did have to do it during a microburst. We had cribbing pre-stacked in a shut down street at 50’ intervals.
No crane is set for 185 mph winds.
didn’t FL change that by law?
Oh my.......
“Just watching the Sat pics, I think the westward jog IS happening”
Looks that way to me. Joe Bastardi appears to be right on target. As stated bad news for South Florida if this holds.
We've tried AMex travel services, airbnb, VRBO, etc.... everything is booked already. Sheesh.
Anyone in the Atlanta area have any ideas???
Yep...dirtboy brought this to our attention back thread.....that concave shape they speak of is too close to Northern Florida, ( where my family member is), in fact Jacksonville has often been referred to as Southern Georgia by some in a kidding sort of way. So I have concerns for them even though they’re very much on top of how this beast of a storm is going.
They actually got more cat carriers, since they now have six beautiful cats, in case they decide they must leave. It’s the waiting until tomorrow or Sat. to see if this thing turns and how it turns when it does that’ll position any to determine what they are going to do ahead of it in that area.
Like I said. Lets hope it is a fluke. And it does not mean that is what is going to happen. It is not time to accept that model as fact. But it would not hurt for everyone in that path to at least start getting ready for the possibility. Be prepared to bug out just in case. For you own safety.
It is about 45 minutes to Chattanooga from Atlanta, you might be able to find something there.
Can you rent a car in ATL if necessary?
There’s other travel agencies on line giving ‘real time’ room availability that the weather channel announced a few minutes ago....maybe someone on here got the name...I’m sorry I didn’t.
Just what the hell is your problem, anyway? Has the "fame" of your thread swelled your head so quickly? YOU don't get to decide who posts here, and who doesn't. YOU owe that Freeper an apology.
I think the sat image at 230 shows it more north than the spaghetti plots are starting at
You are a good son/daughter!
Gopher It!
Check out post 61.
Looks like the Atlantic is taking another shot at the Keys.
It’s forecasting Jose to loop around for another try.
In my opinion, please leave Jose’ off this thread as people can misread the chart and think it is Irma...just a thought
A cold front and high pressure to the west will block it and steer it northward.
It’ll follow the path of least resistance.
View the posting guidlines in post 1. That FReepers post added nothing to the discussion of this storm.
Hey, when you post these awesome images you keep putting up, could you give us the sources as well?
I’d like to be able to use some of them in the future.
