Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

we are good. stay safe.
That makes sense, thanks. I notice the black lines in the graphic narrow to a point, while the others remain parallel.
Question goes to normal (offshore>totally onshore) versus peninsular (this case) wind decay.
Does a hurricane’s windspeed normally decay uniformly, across the whole windfield, or from the inside out (core winds diminish while feeder bands hold energy longer)?
Actually...you might wanna do a reset on that:
@RyanMaue, 10 minutes ago:
Potential for hurricane force wind gusts (> 74 mph) All of Florida peninsula + panhandle Tallahassee --> Jax Most of Georgia inc Atlanta
Wow....thank you for that!
thank you!
Why don’t you post a hurricane prayer thread? I believe it would be most appropriate and welcome. Many of us have family, friends in FL or evacuating & are praying already, but it’s comforting & strengthening to do it as a group and see all the prayers being lifted up. Just a thought.
Look at Hose in that graph.
I’m just not liking this... it’s a timing thing:

A robust annular area of convection, denoted by black on the graphic, presumably scooped up while Irma’s southern quadrants had access to deep warm water while passing between Haiti and Cuba.
It’s already wrapped around the core, available energy for the next 12 to 24 hours as it tightens, diminishing any benefit we might have expected from Cuba’s landmass blocking moisture advection from the warmer side of the circulation.
If applicable here, we’d expect to see intensification beyond the model forecasts.
Make that Jose
Bastardi still forecasting Irma to INCREASE in intensity over the Florida Straits before it scoots up the west side of the Florida peninsula.
Davie FL man (Broward County) fell 15ft to his death today. He fell off a ladder while attempting to board up his 2nd floor.
Lol good one.
Probably so support staff in Florida can evacuate after the last train.
yes thanks very much
I’ll take your word for it, bad drivers showing up all over the place..
Thanks for clearing that up! ;)
That’s so funny. The guy with the lint brush on his cowboy jacket. (I can identify; I have a meaningful relationship with the several lint brushes around the house.) And the one sneezing with allergies.
