Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Only in Florida and Kansas can such terrain be called a “Mountain.” :o)
.
But I would think it going more westerly puts it closer to Cuba, which could cause the storm to weaken somewhat.
The track...look at the track. Almost no shift north. It is becoming an alarm to sound. I don’t know what is causing it, but it seems to be steadily marching westward. If it hits the warm Gulf, you haven’t seen anything yet.
I was trying to be facetious.
Indeed, slamming into Cuber would be the best case for several reasons.
In Va. Beach they turned the landfill into a park. They ran dirt and sod over the huge pile of rubbish and found out it was now the highest point in the area. The park is now named Mount Trashmore.
The Mount Dora area also has hills.
The folks in New Orleans built a hill so their kids would know what one looked like.
By 5pm this evening we'll be close. By 10PM I think we know. West vs East. Not looking good. She is turning more left. West track support. pic.twitter.com/swTGQTMsqG crankyweatherguy (@crankywxguy) September 8, 2017
Someone just posted the above...my, my, my.... Okay, will not go to sarcasm.
Please knock off the snark
There were some hills outside of Gainesville, that we referred to as the “Florida Alps.”
The reason for that is that it is riding the southern side of an immense high pressure system. The upper level currents are all pushing it west.
The back side of that high is now running through the central part of Florida. And to that a low pressure system in the western gulf and there is a distinct steering slot that Irma will slide into. That slot now runs from Key West northward along the west coast of Florida.
Irma will track right into that slot, that is a 99.99% certainty. The only variable now is exactly where the slot is when Irma gets there.
The only way Irma pushes into the gulf is if the High suddenly zooms NE and there is no steering, or if she somehow gets into Cuba completely and shreds apart.
Give it 12 hours or so. Then we can watch our favorite episode of “As the Hurricane Turns”.
Hope so.I know a lot of workers are staging in Alabama and it’s sliding over to them.Son-inLaw left last night. They told him “Expect to be gone 40 days”.
And we’re proud of our “mountain”!
My FIL lived there for some time. That’s a gorgeous little spot, IMO.
All I know is somewhere between Orlando and Tampa was a huge hill we found out was a landfill :)
