Congress has tried to sneak through amnesties three times in a little more than a decade. Every time, the American people somehow found out -- despite the best efforts of the press -- rose up in a rage and killed the proposed bills.
In 2006, President Bush got the brilliant idea to push amnesty on the country. His party was wiped out the very next time voters could get to the polls.
Liberals like to claim that their brave opposition to the Iraq War led to the midterm slaughter, but, as I recall, they were against that war in the 2004 presidential election, too, and Bush won. An April 2006 Washington PostABC News poll -- taken about a month after Bush launched his amnesty crusade -- showed that more Americans approved of Bush's handling of the Iraq War than approved of his handling of immigration. In nearly every poll on Bush's handling of immigration that year, a huge majority of the public disapproved.
Three years ago, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his seat to an unknown economics professor, Dave Brat, by a whopping 55 percent to 45 percent, despite outspending Brat 40-to-1. It was the first time in history a member of leadership had lost a primary. (This despite Cantor being one of the Young Guns!) Brat had explicitly attacked Cantor for supporting amnesty.
Most spectacularly, last year, an utterly implausible presidential candidate crushed all his opponents -- including the media -- and won the White House by promising to deport illegals and build a wall.
The media imagine that President Trump's deficiencies are an argument for not taking his positions seriously. Oh no -- it's just the reverse.

She campaigned hard for Trump in the primaries and bashed the conservative candidates. Now she acts surprised to find out that Trump is actually not a conservative.
Fallen out of favor is an understatement.
Which candidates in the primary were conservatives? That’s laughable. Cruz, Ruby-o
Our rulers are just that “RULERS”. We are no longer a free people, when Obama won republicans told us elections have consequences and supports his programs. When Trump wins republicans refuse to support our platform.
Ann nails Ryan , Ivanka and Trump for the liars and phonies they are regarding illegals .
Kelly stated he would never deport these phony dreamers scammers and even trump called this illegal trash’ incrediable kids’ when they are actually adults and many gangs members .
Trump has let his daughter drive his agenda to the Manhattan Learjet left and Kelly is a swamp monster / cheap labor person .
We are screwed .
Raise hell folks trump is worse on amnesty than Bush in some aspects .
Call congress and derail them all .
Especially Co-Pres Ivanka the Learjet lib.
President Donald J. Trump continues to govern in the most Conservative manner since Calvin Coolidge. He’s cut federal jobs by 10% so far something that not even Reagan accomplished, eliminated 1600 regulations and he’s reduced illegal immigration by a huge amount simply by giving the border patrol a freehand. As with any other politician observe what he does, rather than what he says.
Agree—this is a brilliant piece by Ann, and gives good talking points and facts we all can use to stop ANY amnesty in the bud.
Sorry Ann, but there isn’t two parties. There is only the left and right side of the Uniparty. It’s kinda like the Twix thing.
Sorry Ann, but there isn’t two parties. There is only the left and right side of the Uniparty. It’s kinda like the Twix thing.I just read something elsewhere:
“There is the evil party, and the stupid party. Sometimes, they get together and do something that is both evil and stupid. And call it ‘bipartisanship.’”
“Sometimes,..” is becoming to often.
In this latest deal I see nothing he did less conservative than what the GOP wanted. They just wanted a lounger deal for political comfort, something they did not deserve. Perfect opportunity for Trump to slap them.
Trump, like me, is a paleo conservative. Ever read the 1924 Republican Party Platform? The Globalist neocon Free Traitors will never like Trump.
The issue is him turning on his signature issue that made him president and is critical to the country.
None of us voted for Jivanka or all the Democrats and neocons Trump has allowed them to surround him with.
At this point Trump’s statements are worth nothing. How long ago was it he was threatening the ol’ government shutdown to get funding for the wall from Congress? Now he is promising to always boost the debt ceiling—so get nothing in negotiations over it (as he got nothing this week).
Conservatives eating their own. Foolishness. Desertion in the face of the enemy. Holier than thou pride
....deport illegals and build a wall........
DO IT Dammit, DO IT!
I think I will design some T-shirts and start selling them, that ought to cause a bit of a stir.
Nope. When Bannon went into the WH he said we needed to hold the admin accountable to Trump’s promises.
Amnesty is a country killer.
Trump was by far the best option we had—and it looks like the swamp got to him via Ivanka, which he of course has gone along with.
Annie is right. We’ve got to hope that Trump comes to his senses, but right now it isn’t looking good.
You have never liked Trump and never miss a chance to bitch about him. I think Trump has held up greatly, with everyone attacking him everyday. He is the smartest President in my lifetime and I will stick with him to the end.
“You have never liked Trump and never miss a chance to bitch about him.”
AMEN!!!!
“He is the smartest President in my lifetime and I will stick with him to the end.”
Same here. President Trump is the 1st pro-America president we’ve had since Reagan. He’s doing a great job considering all of DC is working against him.
No and no.
