McCain Throws Support Behind Graham-Cassidy Obamacare Repeal Effort

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Wednesday that he would support a plan to repeal Obamacare led by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA).

”Yes. You think I wouldn’t be?” McCain told reporters Wednesday, asked if he would support the legislation, the Hill reported.

Arizona’s senior senator, whose close friendship with Graham is well known, affirmed that he thought the bill, in The Hill’s words, “has legs before Sept. 30.”

The Graham-Cassidy legislation would essentially dismantle much of Obamacare’s federal infrastructure, turning over federal dollars to the states to do with what they wish, though that flexibility at the state level would come at a sharp cost. Judith Solomon, vice president for health policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, told Politico on August 1 that she estimated it would result in 16 percent less federal spending in 2020 versus the Obamacare status quo’s spending on Medicaid expansion and market subsidies. McCain was one of three Republican votes against Senate

Republicans’ Obamacare repeal effort in late July. Notably, he objected as much to the process by which the legislation had arrived in the Senate for a vote as to the content of the effort itself. McCain is a sometimes loud proponent of so-called “regular order.”

I despise McCain more than anyone else, but this is actually good news.

This is the bill that Rick Santorum, Scott Walker and the Freedom Caucus have been working on. If momentum can build on this, it can get through the Senate.

Does it eliminate the mandates?

This article says that it does repeal the mandates.

“But Cassidy-Graham also ends the two policies that are meant to bring healthy people into the marketplace: the mandate to purchase coverage and the tax subsidies to make coverage affordable.”

Thank you. I did click on that article, but I despaired of ever finding the answer. They buried it deep in the details. They must not understand how much the mandates are hated.

Will the Freedom Cacus get on board? If so, there is a chance. If they’re not on board, neither am I.

They’d better have something they can vote through......or Trump will rub their noses in it.

"Does it eliminate the mandates?"

It doesn't matter. Trump ordered the IRS not to enforce the mandates.

perhaps McShame only voted against repeal in order to express his anger that DJT and not McShame is President

maybe he really WILL vote for repeal, after all

i doubt he has any real principles anyway, so...?

Even if the bill was ready, McConnell and Ryan would not let it on the floor. McConnell and Ryan are not RINOs but communists Democrats and rotten garbage. They both must be voted by both parties out of leadership.

He needs to get rid of Obamacare this needs to be top priority. If McCain can’t do it he needs to resign and let the republican Arizona governor appoint an honest republican in his place.

It doesn't matter. Trump ordered the IRS not to enforce the mandates.

It'll matter in 2020 if a Democrat President manages to get elected. The mandates must be repealed.
