The military is braced for it to hit the U.S. mainland and the current forecast suggests it could strike Florida over the weekend.
More than 5,000 military active duty, civilians, contractors and families based at Naval Air Station Key West have received mandatory evacuation orders, according to U.S. Navy officials. The officials familiar with the evacuation plan say approximately 50 to 60 personnel will stay to man essential functions at the installation.
The Commander of the U.S. Navy Region Southeast ordered the mandatory evacuation of non-essential personnel and dependents from NAS Key West to safe haven within 300 miles of Atlanta, Georgia, according to Navy spokesman Bill Dougherty.
Navy officials tell CNN that aircraft, including fixed-wing planes and helicopters will be moving inland from Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida.
Submarines are preparing to evacuate or have been evacuated from Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia, according to several Navy officials. In the coming days, other Navy installations may be ordered to evacuate.
Dougherty said Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will shelter in place for the storm as it passes north of Cuba.

RUN AWAY!
I am so screwed.
This is good news. No point is someone dying when people can be evacuated.
I am sure Key West can use a good rinse or two.
I have relatives in Orlando. Worried about them. They may come stay with us if things look bad.
how dare they they should stay and help the peeples/s
But will any civilians learn how a NEO is supposed to be done?
I dought it.
There is enough time so that any able road worthy vehicle should be moved far enough inland so not to be floating around like a fishing bobber.
Kills me to see ruined vehicles because they couldn’t be moved when there’s enough time to do so.
Those personnel deserve combat pay and a fist full of medals.
They will show, if the civilians look, watch and truly observe, take detailed notes, on how to do a Mandatory NEO!
My ship was tasked with evacuating military dependents and contractors from GTMO in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Scary times. This is just as scary for those in the path; God watch over them.
The peeples have been ordered to evacuate too.
I was never evacuated from Gloria in Norfolk (1985). They just told us to stay in the barracks. Thank goodness Pat Robertson prayed it away ...(/sarsasm)
