“...Monroe Co. Emergency Operations Center Director Martin Senterfitt. The grim outlook prompted Senterfitt to order mandatory evacuations.”

It may be a bad decision to stay but can someone explain who and on what basis someone can make an evacuation “mandatory”? We have this debate in my county all the time during snow storms.

I would rather they say “we will not bail your stupid arse out if you stay” and actually stick to it. You stay you bear the full consequences no rescue choppers, no airdrops, etc..

Here in Florida, they cannot be forced to evacuate. So the deputies tell them they will not be rescued. And then they ask for Next-of Kin info................

Harry Truman was allowed to decide to stay during that big volcano. He stayed and paid with his life but he seemed to be okay with that.

“Mandatory evacuation” means exactly that - you are on your own.
