The Western US is facing cataclysmic forest fires, at least one started by idiot boys throwing fireworks in Eagle Creek area, near Multnomah Lodge, in the COLUMBIA GORGE - a greenie paradise. I-84 is closed near Multnomah Files to Exit 62, just west of Hood River.

That is a terrible shame. We were just down there a few weeks ago and it was absolutely beautiful. We went through Hood River and White Salmon and spent the night in Goldendale. It was so pretty that we went back the same way to spend more time viewing the sights instead of heading North through Yakima and across Steven's Pass.
There were a lot of idiots from Portland which is only 50 or 60 miles away. It is sad that the place is now burning to the ground.
Idaho...smoke so bad have to keep my dog inside.
Great resources on this thread, and thanks for posting. This stuff is forecast to be around until Friday, when the wind should shift and blow it into somebody else's face. Sorry about that.
NOAA Smoke Map, 9/4/17
https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ is a good site to follow. If you go their home page, you can select the state of interest at the upper right corner. Or, you can just monitor incidents across the country with narrowing your search to a particular state.
They post new reports at the top of the list if you click on “Updated” at the top of the time of report column. The header to the report should state:
“Viewing 1-10 of 199 incidents sorted by MODIFIED in DESCENDING order.” if you are trying to get reports for the entire U.S.
At the time of this post, there had been 10 incident reports across the country within the last 11 minutes. So they keep the reports up to date for the active incidents where there is activity of concern.
For instance, the latest Arizona report was over 4 days ago. So there is nothing pressing happening.
Thanks. We’re headed to CDA and Hayden tomorrow morning. What a time to visit! I read last night you are getting westerly flows from MT.
“Its raining ash in Western Washington today.”
It sure is. Everything is covered.
We are in the foothills on the western side of the mountains. It is probably 90 miles from the nearest large fire, but the moon was red last night and the sun is orange. This morning the car was covered with ash. And of course is smells like fire.
Someone should really be held accountable for this forest mismanagement, but the problem is now endemic among the leadership. So axing one head in the forest service will just get you the next in line who thinks the same way. My long retired uncle was once one of the head guys in the forest service. He started out fighting wild fires while studying forest management in college. Later in his career it seemed he was always on the front lines as well. I haven't talked about this latest debacle with him but he has been the primary influence on my point of view.
Welcome to the Big Ash Tray! Yeah, if you look on the map you see the problem - we don't actually have any close fires but the ones that are there are all around us. Hope you don't have any boating planned - the lake I'm looking at right now is completely devoid of activity, which is kind of weird for this time of year.
Same here near the foothills. We have ash on everything this morning. Our dog took a big sniff in the grass outside and started coughing like crazy.
OT, but we visited the Fallen Firefignters Memorial in Colo Springs yesterday. It's really hard seeing all the names of the fallen IAFF fire fighters, but especially hard when you come to the 9/11 section. Lots of tears there.
Been very hazy here in New Mexico for the past week or so.
Getting a lot of smoke in W. Nebr.,but today is pretty clear. I’m sure the fires aren’t out yet.
No boating planned. We continue to look at property around Hayden (I think we've become professional looking-loo's). At least we'll get a chance to see the area with a new coat of ash and a red sun. All the magnificent scenery was getting boring.
I’m surrounded by fires here in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Both of my evacuation trailers are parked in front of the house in case I need to drive off the mountain and out of the woods.
Damn scary times.
Same here in eastern Washington (Spokane). I have never seen it this bad for this long and there is no end in sight.
The weekend at the lake was a total bust. Who want's to go boating when can't see and all you can do it choke on the smoke.
We broke the record for both days over 90 degrees and consecutive days without rain this summer. Yuck.
Thanks so much for the picture. I feel for the guys trying to fight these wild fires. It is more dangerous on average than what we city firefighters had to face during my career. And a lot of them get paid very little.
The last wild fire I was assigned to I ended up crawling through poison oak on a steep hillside and got a big clump of it under my T-shirt where it rubbed against my skin for a good long while we were running around and busy. I got so much of the oil absorbed into my skin that my problems went systemic and had serious difficulties for weeks and had to be put on prednisone. Then the prednisone triggered a bad bout of what is called central serous retinopathy which is basically bumps on the inside of your retna. It caused me to be legally blind for a period of time. Fortunately it was not permanent all though I still have some residual issues on occasion.
I have a solution:
Rotate the American Continent 180 degrees.
This will allow Irma to put out the fires.
Plus the illegal immigrants headed north will find themselves in the artic.
Beautiful solution! “Paging Congressman Hank Johnson!”
You know, that might work! It’d kind of tick off the folks in Houston whose flooded basements turn into ice rinks, but hey, hockey!
