If The Boston Globe is so interested in confronting the dark legacies of racism by changing the street named after former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, perhaps Charles Street should be next. John Henry, the current owner of the Red Sox as well as the Globe has let it be known through his paper that Yawkeys legacy is forever tainted by his racist actions by not hiring black baseball players in a timely fashion.
The Globe tied Yawkey to proslavery, Civil War Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, whose statues in the name of equality are being smashed everywhere by Americas version of the Taliban
I admit being a bit surprised that Boston didn’t go around and change the names of all things honoring their British legacy after the revolution. But having a street named for a notorious English King sounds bizarre, just on general principles.
"Charles precipitated the first English Civil War when he absolved Parliament."
My thought, too. There are a lot of things named "Charles" in Boston, though, because they didn't rename the river.
Some place names were changed after the Revolution. Charleston, SC was originally Charles Town, and just changing the spelling was enough after the Revolution. Boston's State Street was once King Street. Crown Street in New York became Liberty Street. A King Street became Pine Street and Queen Street became Cedar, but as the city grew there was room for more King and Queen Streets.
There was this, though:
They must re-name the Charles River, and Charlestown, and... on and on.
I’ve always thought that woman in the hat was over-dressed for the occasion.
