North Korea openly threatens EMP attack for the first time, changing the game

The news Sunday morning that North Korea had launched what appeared to be its sixth nuclear test and most powerful one to date is troubling enough.
But a statement from the rogue regime took things to a whole new level. The North said it had tested an H-bomb that was a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack according to strategic goals.
This is the first time it has publicly mentioned its interest and ability in an EMP attack, a devastating weapon that could have catastrophic consequences for North America, the West and their closer neighbours.
An EMP attack, as I detail in my new book Pulse Attack, is a nuclear detonation that occurs in the atmosphere and creates a waveform that can take down the electrical grid below.
In the worst case scenario, this wouldnt just shut off the power for minutes or hours, but weeks or even months, due to serious damage to transformer stations and other integral elements of our power infrastructure.
This wouldnt just mean we couldnt turn on our laptops and televisions; it would shut down our telecommunications, transportation, water systems, our ability to get food to cities and much more.

The primary threat to South Korea is artillery on the DMZ. It could devastate Seoul. This artillery could be negated quickly with neutron bombs. It would take hundreds. Fallout from a neutron bomb is minimal. It would not affect South Korea. Sadly we have withdrawn this weapon from our nuclear arsenal. I wonder how long it would take us to re-institute this weapon into our arsenal? I have no idea.
If push came to shove with North Korea and we wanted the minimal casualties the logical plan of attack would be Neutron bombs, many hundreds, to take out their very potent conventional artillery on the DMZ. At the same time conventional nukes to hit each and every one of their nuclear and suspected nuclear installations.
War is ugly. Do not go to war if you can not be ugly. Otherwise you will lose.
North Korea has threatened us with an EMP attack. This could bring us to our knees as a functioning society. It would not affect our ability to deliver ruination on any nation that did this to us.
I think North Korea is a “Clear and Present Danger” that is better addressed now than later.
North Korea is a useful tool of China and Russia. We can destroy China via economic sanctions. China can destroy North Korea by cutting off all trade and economic ties with North Korea.
China’s largest trading partner is the United States and her economy is dependent on it. A 100% import fee on all their goods would get their attention. North Korea is not worth that to them.
Relative to Russia we are already killing them via shale oil. Russia’s export economy is oil and military weapons. We are killing them on the price of oil. Their gross domestic product is but a fraction of the USA. That is how we collapsed the old Soviet Union years ago. If they produce more oil to try gain money it will only depress the price of oil further. It is a lose lose proposition.
The best answer to the problem is to use our economic power on those that control North Korea which is mainly China and to some extent Russia. At the same time a potent military action must be available if economic diplomacy fails.
We don’t even have to nuke them, just take out a few choice dams is enough to do very serious damage.
I am sure we will use high power microwaves (HPMs)against the Norks. Much of the United States’ EMP research has involved HPMs. Such weapons are like super powerful microwave ovens. Their specialty is they can generate a super concentrated beam of microwave energy. HPMs can be mounted to a cruise missile, disrupting ground targets from above. They are precise and affect exactly where we want them to.
Another kind of device that generates an EMP is the flux compression generator (FCGs). This type of bomb, like the HPMs, requires high technology to make them work. Basically the FCG has a armature surrounded by a stator winding. The armature cylinder is filled with a high explosive. The bomb also has a power source, such as a bank of capacitors, which are discharged through the stator. When the capacitors discharge a tremendous charge through the stator, a huge magnetic field is created. At that point an explosion is set off, causing the stator to short circuit. This compresses the magnetic field, generating an intense electromagnetic burst.
This type of weapon affects a relatively small area and is nothing like the widespread damage of a nuclear EMP device. Its advantage is it can concentrate its effect on a select area, much like the HPM.
This is a job for Superman.

EMP is generally described in three forms- E1,2 & 3.
The civilization killer model, the E3, is caused by a very high altitude nuclear explosion that excites the atmosphere with X-rays causing very high energy electrons to propagate over a wide area. These high energy electrons induce voltage spikes in electronics. This is what kills a high tech civilization.
Net: a ground burst is not an EMP killer. The Korean test was underground and the direct pulse was absorbed by the earth.

The book hardly deserves being described as “goofy.”
You might recall from the book there were a number of gasoline and diesel vehicles repaired to run. Fuel and oil became the issues.
Indeed nuclear EMP might not disable all modern vehicles, particularly highly shielded vehicles like hybrids, but the overall supply chains of western civilization would arguably crumble.
I almost agree with you.
The grid can be ‘shut down’ for a solar pulse, the so-called Carrington effect pulse, because that pulse is long-wave, slow rise, and sensitive components can be isolated from induced currents and thus protected.
I am however unconvinced that the controlling electronics are protected from the nuclear E3 (X-ray -> electrons) pulse. That’s is the technology killer for the grid.

What you write is only true of 2 of the three pulses from a high altitude Nuclear explosion.
E1 is the much cited Carrington-event style pulse. It is slow-rise voltages induced into long antenna like wires on poles.
E2 is more like a lightning strike
E3 however is the problem. It is very short rise, short wavelength, high energy that induces voltage in small circuits even if powered off. Devices can be shielded from this, but the controlling computers and ICs of the grid are not.

They have surely been given assistance if they have an ICBM transportable thermonuclear weapon.
I would assume fat boy has all of his thousands of artillery pieces, loaded and ready to take out Seoul, at a moment's notice. If the artillery is not destroyed in minutes, there is a decent chance Seoul could be wiped out.
